OK so the judge based his decision on the fact that Mr Anwar would not be able to carry on running his business without his driving licence. I know many white people who have used the same reasoning and got away with it.

As we all know,if Mr Anwar had lost his licence the Daily mail would have been bleating on about how we had to support him on benefit.

When it comes to avoiding a ban for speeding, the courts hear every excuse in the book.


But yesterday one motorist offered what must be a unique reason why he should keep his licence.


Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties.


His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow - he is allowed up to four under his religion - and sleeps with them on alternate nights.


He also needed his driving licence to run his restaurant in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.


Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification.


Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence.


Instead, he was fined £200 and given six penalty points.


Lorna Jackson, from the road safety charity Brake, called the decision "astonishing".

She said: "Regardless of the number of wives or businesses this man drives to, he broke a law which is there to protect everyone.


"Travelling just a few miles over the limit in a 30mph zone can be the difference between life and death if you hit someone, let alone driving at more than twice the speed limit.


"Drivers know the law, and they know the punishment they could face when they break it.


"For the courts to allow someone to keep their licence when they have so blatantly flouted the law and put peoples' lives at risk, on the basis of an excuse such as this, is astonishing."

Anwar, wearing a suit and an open-neck shirt, had made no comment during his five-minute court appearance, apart from confirming his identity.


But last night, speaking from his restaurant Sanam, he said: "It is true I have two wives.

"Muslim men are allowed up to four. But I am not a religious leader and it is not my place to comment.


"As a matter of respect to my wives I would not comment on my home life.


"The sheriff did not ban me because I need my licence to run my business, although my wives were also part of the decision."

The court had heard that Anwar was on his way home from Falkirk to his Glasgow wife on August 21, 2007, when he was caught by city police using a hand-held speed camera.


His lawyer, Paul Nicolson, said: "He realises his licence is at risk, but this is an unusual case and is very anxious to keep his driving licence.


"He has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow and sleeps with one one night and stays with the other the next on an alternate basis.


"Without his driving licence he would be unable to do this on a regular basis.


"He is also a restaurant owner and has a restaurant in Falkirk, which he has had for the past 30 years.


"He has had a clean driving licence until now, and on this particular evening was on his way home after a busy evening at his restaurant."

Anwar's successful plea joins a long list of unusual excuses heard in the courts down the years.


Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was cleared of illegally driving on a motorway hard shoulder because he said he was rushing to a toilet.


David Beckham also escaped a ban after arguing he had to break the speed limit to escape a photographer.

well Rosalyn..........I would never have believed it....thats equivalent to doing over twice the speed limit, and getting away with it!!
on a motorway thats over 140mph!!!!

The judicial system cant be seen to be biased against his race can they? What a load of sh***.
He should bog off back to his own country and take all the wives with him.

Haven't read all of the post on this thread, but my answer is.....definately wrong.

As my late father said, when in Rome , do as the Romans.

Would we Brits expect such special tratment abroad?......I think not.

Incidentally, the individual referred to lived not far from here.

Found it after a very convoluted search!!

I'm prepared to believe it if I see it, but I've heard so many similar stories that I treat them all with the utmost scepticism unless they are there to be seen.

I searched on headlines and keywords, using every word I could imagine that might be relevant but no joy. Searched all the other Scottish papers I could find online, again with no joy.

Nor me. I've just looked at every news article between tuesday and friday.

Mind you, even if it is there, doesn't mean that the journo got it right. Wouldn't be the first time a journo published a story without checking its authenticity first.

Happens quite often round here. Try putting something spurious on a community forum and see how long before it is published as "fact" in your local paper on a slow news week. Obviously this works best if theres lots of you elaborating!

Can you remeber anytihng about the headline? I'm searching the evening news archives for last week, but not getting any hits on speeding

Not sure of the background of this website to cannot account for bias etc.

If you break the law in which ever country you are in,then you must expect, the law of that country to be applied. If people are not willing to stay with-in the law they should stay at home,and not try and change the laws to suit, them or their kind.

thats a point - now that is cruel and unusual punishment.

Interesting, then. Can you tell me which paper it was?

Be interested to see that, because, as I say, judges dont try speeding cases and in any case in Scotland it is Sherrifs....is it not? And polygamy is still a crime in Scotland as well as England.

Bit like the traffic cop with a radar gun and was ""Allegedly"" targeted by a fully armed aircraft, because its defence electronics locked onto said radar gun!?

Its an urban myth, folks!

Repeat it often enough and becomes fact though, as all good urban myths do :-)

But if someone can point me in the direction of the said story............

However, there are a couple of clues....

1. Road Traffic offences involving speeding are not heard by judges. They are heard by magistrates.

2. Polygamy is not legal in the UK. For a man to say he has 2 wives, thereby commiting the offence of bigamy under UK law, to avoid a road traffic act conviction would not be the most sensible thing in the world to do........

Ahh, but why let facts and common sense get in the way of a good old story!
