So sorry to hear about your dad, I agree with Bella Donna the living years by Mike and the Mechanics is good song for dads, it makes me cry. As does this one sung by Josh Groban . . To where you are

Who can say for certain
Maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me
Your memory's so clear
Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You're still an inspiration
Can it be
That you are my
Forever love
And you are watching over me
From up above
Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile
To know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are
Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing
All power can't be seen
As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me
Everyday
'Cause you are my
Forever love
Watching me
From up above
And I believe
That angels breathe
And that love will live on
And never leave
Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile
To know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are
I know you're there
A breath away's not far
To where you are

Hi Lainey
Im sorry to hear about your dad.
I like over the rainbow but not the Judy garland version there is a more upbeat version with what sounds like ukeleles?
Not sure who sung it though

Sorry for your loss babes

Cant think of a song but have found this poem for you and your family

What is a Dad?

A Dad is a person
who is loving and kind,
And often he knows
what you have on your mind.
He's someone who listens,
suggests, and defends.
A dad can be one
of your very best friends!
He's proud of your triumphs,
but when things go wrong,
A dad can be patient
and helpful and strong
In all that you do,
a dad's love plays a part.
There's always a place for him
deep in your heart.
And each year that passes,
you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud
just to call him your dad!
Thank you, Dad...
for listening and caring,
for giving and sharing,
but, especially, for just being you!

When my sil died unexpectedly in her sleep her chilren chose Honey as she was brought into church and Happy days are here again going out which at the time I thought a bit odd, but have realised since they were thinking she'd now joined their dad, my brother and she would now be happy, it's all so personal isn't it?

Just found lyrics re "O mein Papa" didn't realise Eddie Calvert was born in Preston Lancashire

Although Eddie Calvert's was an instrumental version,
I have included the full lyrics below on request

Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my pa-pa, he always understood.

Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter

Oh, my pa-pa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way
Oh, my pa-pa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today

I am so very sorry to hear of your sad loss.................Dad's are so precious aren't they.

We played tunes and songs that Dad had always sung and loved.

He was always singing............so we had plenty to choose from.

Thanks everyone. All lovely suggestions that I will put to my brothers and sisters. As Colin says we want to commemorate him because he was our hero. Not everyone can be a father to another man's children but he did it better than the natural father's. It would be nice to acknowledge that in some way.
