She was definitely offered general but opted for local. She's otherwise healthy all round so she should be fine *fingers crossed*

I had to have a cone biopsy in 1980, had a general anaesthetic and was in for five days. I had to go for frequent smears for several years but the time between them got longer and longer, till I was 'signed off' and only have to go every 2 or 3 yrs now. I think I must be due another one, I usually go to my local Family Planning Clinic as they are more adept at doing them, they do them so often. I am a bit wonky inside like you Liz lol and my own doc has a problem getting a good smear so rather than keep going back to her cos she couldn't get it right, I just call up the FPC and they do it.
I had been trying for a baby for several years after I lost my daughter and didn't fall pregnant, but after I had the cone biopsy, I got pregnant the first week of trying! I am sure that had something to do with it, my body was telling me something before hand.
Hope your s.i.l is fine after hers, I did have problems, I haemorrhaged and got rushed back in for a few more days, but it was a minor infection and I was fine after that.

hey there i'm new to all this so was just having a look around the site. i've been through all this myself, it is uncomfortable & you do get some bleeding but it's worth it. After 5 years i've finally been told everythings ok. it can take a while, but it will work out in the end. hope all goes well for your sis in law.

Oh Maggie, that's hilarious, I'd probably say something equally amusing in that situations. Really not a good idea to do it at that point though. Although it is easier to make jokes with that as oppose to the dentist LOL.

Fortunatly Summer I dont get those anymore :))))) Maybe once or twice a year ....but you can bet it will be on a special occasion!

SS i did ask them if i could be put out and they said no :-(
but im glad i wasnt put out coz i saw parts that other beers can not reach lol.

I had positive smears every year for 12 years - the first one being just after the birth of my second child, before they decided to see if anything was wrong!! Four of those years were 6 monthly smears.
I think I eventually had what you're talking about - where they burn bits off etc. and take samples.
I had a local, and a very boring picture to look at. Must admit I found it intriguing. The nurse was being so 'attentive', I wished I'd taken a book so she'd leave me alone.
The bloke doing it (why would a man want to specialise in that??) was Australian, and as I smelt the burning flesh, I just couldn't help blurting out 'Put another prawn on the barbie Bruce!!' *note to self: not a good idea to make a bloke laugh when he has burning hot probes in tender bits* lol

Don't forget the slightest little thing can cause a positive smear - a bit of fluff from a tampon, sperm - anything!! Later on I had a biopsy and all they found was the papo thingy virus which the consultant blamed on my 'lifestyle' - when it was assumed you slept around. I informed him (through gritted teeth) that when I had my first positive, I had only slept with my husband (by then ex), and perhaps he should talk to him about HIS lifestyle. Strangely he didn't think it necessary!!

I was meant to have one a year after that. Must admit I'm a bit naughty, have had 2 in the past 6 years, both were negative - I deliberately stopped using tampons a few months before both, don't know if that's relevant, but could be.

Max, funnily enough, as much as I hated the smear, I'd rather have that than go to dentist. I'm glad things improved for you. Every three months must have taken some getting used to.

Hi Summer I'm the biggest wimp in the world - I pass out if i cut myself, needles etc I just don't know how ive managed to have 2 children - anyway when I was 19 i had to have laser and a cone biopsy - which is i think the old name for the treatment - i had a general - bled for a few days after but no pain - no sex for 6 wks or tampons!!! altogether i have had it done 3 times - my smears went to every 3 months for 3 years then 6 monthly for 2 years then 1 yearly for 2 years now every 3 years (which i must get booked as overdue!!!!) I have had that many smears now it does not bother me and put this way I'd rather have a smear/baby than go to the dentist - hope all works out well

ive had it its uncomfortable and embarrassing i even watched it on the screen with my sister lol.
But at the end of the day it can save ya life.

Kerry, I'm glad it seems to have worked and that you're getting clear smears. As good as my brother is I doubt he'd be up to standing and watching, but he's sure to be there to take her home with lots of choccies.

My SiL will talk his ears off, trouble is she's also got a very loud voice. I'll pass on what to expect afterwards though :-) And you're both so right, it is preferable to the alternative.

Nothing worse than watching Alan Titchmarsh talking about bedding plants while having someone messing about down there is there?! LOL.

I'll pass that along. Unfortunately we are on holiday that week so will have to tell my brother to pamper her a bit. Not that he'll need telling really because he's pretty good like that.

The butterflies remind me of my dentist who had those weird Escher prints on the ceiling so you had something to concentrate on while he was poking your teeth.

Hi Summer just like Sunshine i had Diathermy done last January are finding pre cancerous cells on my cervix..It's not as bad as you think but still a bit scary as its the unknown that seems to scare me more..I talked to surgeon all the way through and got him to tell me everything he was doing.My partner came with me and stood down THAT end watching the whole process which strangley made me feel calmer.....Slightly uncomfy and bleeding for a few days and after two clear smears im now breathing a sigh of relief....

Yeah, 6 monthly for two years and then yearly - it is blinky well horrible, but better than the alternative i suppose.
When i had my diathermy they had a tv there and asked me if i wanted to watch as they were doing it! Errr no ta, i'll look at those blue butterflies on the ceiling instead!!
At my last smear i was told i had a well behaved cervix!!
Tell your SIL that it's really not so bad - but to expect flowers, chocs and sympathy from all her nearest and dearest.
