Al... I'll have to keep it simple, lol.... don't *do* complicated, me!!

One of the rellies on this line was in prison for the 1891 census, but he was a cousin of my ancestoor, and I haven't gone down that twig yet!!

Brenda, this was in 1788, so he was in the first wave, too, was he???? oooh this is even more exciting!! He was sentenced in Exeter... I'm off in a mo to try and get into Ancestry again, as it was playing me up last night!

Mick... does that mean I get to use the bathwater first, then? lol

daff one of my lot broke into a chemist and stole money from the till he was 12.he was sentenced to 2mths.. theres nothing like find a rogue in the family lol xx

Looking through the transcripts this morning has made me weep.

Fuzzy, there were some people sentenced to death for that sort of crime!!

My convict was convicted of stealing mutton worth 7shillings. Once in Australia he was sentenced to 200 lashes for nicking his tentmates flour... and he had to pay the flour back.

He was also ordered to receive 50 lashes for selling (not stealing, but selling) a pair of shoes!

I haven't found out whether he stayed in Australia when he completed his 7 years, or whether he came back to Britain.

It seems mine and Daff's are on the same ship,and mine was convicted to be executed for stealing 6/6d,but as they were trying to start this new colony at Botany Bay,so his sentence was commuted to 7 years transportation.

My mother always told us we had an brother of a direct ancestor that was hanged as a pirate in the west indies! The closest I've found was one who died of yellow fever in the west indies. Do we presume the story was embellished for dramatic effect ????? Ogilvie is the surname, one brother was a doctor who became mayor of Kingston Jamaica apparently, one was in grenada and fathered a whole boat-load of children, not sure if the 2 were brothers or different generations. They all originated in Dundee area, my line went to ireland.

My dad just phoned... he was totally underwhelmed at first, and muttered about letting sleeping dogs lie etc... then I pointed out that this guy served his sentence, and is one of the *founding fathers* of Australia... I know, I know.... he is easily swayed by a little bit of embroidery, lol!!

Snowie, thanks for that... I have a death registered in 1823, and the birth of a son the year he would have finished his sentence, in the 1790's.... Almost certain to be him!!
