My children's father had (probably still has) blonde hair and a red beard, one of my children has reddish blonde hair, as did I as a child. Now I am proud of my white and grey hair - I've earned every one of those white hairs!!
No redheads that I know of in the past generation either.
One of my granddaughters friends has beautiful red hair, which she is growing to be cut for "locks of Love", to make a wig for a child with cancer.

My daughter's future Italian father in law has ginger hair, and her future English mother in law was a sort of strawberry blonde.
Daughter's fiance had ginger hair as a baby - but it's black now!!

Interestingly did you know that 'early man'(and woman) - as in back in cave man days - are to be proven to be redheads!!!!
I heard it somewhere that rather than the brown or dark hair we see 'they' actually had red hair (or carried the 'red' gene!)
Apparently the red hair is dying out due to inter-racial relationships and people 'not liking ginger!'

I have a red haired son and daughter (and another son & daughter with mousy hair!) and a red haired grandaughter. The baby has sandy/blond hair at the moment, but as he looks like his uncle (my son) did at that age, I think he may turn out ginger too. The other 3 grandchildren are blonde, mousy and brunette.

My maternal grandad had sandy hair and one of his sisters was a dark redhead. My lot are paler (daughter says apricot blonde!) with very pale skin. Son & grandaughter have blue eyes and daughter's eyes are green. Must be the Irish in her! LOL No known redheads in OH's family at all.

Mousy son says redheads are taking over the world, but I think he's just jealous!

Funniliy enough hubby has a thing about redheads good job for me. Mine is dark red and was always told byu hairdressers that people would pay good money to get a dye to match it as its hard to colour match. More money than sense some people.


Hated mine as a child and as I was tall used to slouch as the height and ginger hair didnt mix well at school hated being noticed.

Will be interesting to see what colour hair my cousins baby has see if the red hair carries on there

My Mum would tell you all off. It is not red hair or ginger it is Auburn!!. That is what she used to say.:-))
I was the only one of three kids not to have it but it has been carried on my brothers son has two little girls with the most beautiful red hair.
Found out while doing my tree that my GGGrandfatehr had red hair. Whoops sorry Mum.

is funny as you do all this research and see old photos but they are black and white s cant tell.

I knew gt granny had red heair but me being dark auburn thought was same as me but no it was really bright red

Dawnie yes it all came out when I was asking an Aunty who was anmed after who she said she thought Peter was named after Peter Nolan he had red hair. Perhaps the gene is changing and that i why you are dark aubrun. I love that colour used to be really envious of my brother and tried to get it out of a bottle of course never could.

I do hope not, i come from a long line of redheads, grandparents and parents, 5 of us kiddies all with different shades of red, mine being the most curly and bright,
i used to hate it years ago, but now i love it, although with a little age, it is now more strawberry blonde,

No sign of my daughters or grandaughter taking the red on lol, what a shame

I was born with auburn hair,,colour long gone now though!

Mum and 3 of her 4 sisters had aurburn too...inherited from their mother (Irish Brady's known for their auburn hair...not ginger...that's a completely differnt colour.)

Myself and only 2 others of my 16 cousins inherited auburn hair.....and only 1 on the next generation has inherited the gene.....and her hair is to die for. Absolutely Fabulous!

I wonder if it will crop up again in any future generation's children?

Looks like it will be gone forever..unless somebody marries a red head!

I haven't read the full thread (norty me, will go back and read it) but my initial thought is that, if I remember my genetics from uni, that the redhead gene is recessive, as are blue eyes and therefore with the increased mixing of the gene pool because people travel more and their partners come from all over, it is quite feasible that the red head gene could die out. That said, spontaneous mutations can occur and randomly throw up a red head in a family where none were seen before, alternatively due to the recessive nature can see a redhead born several generations after the last one.

(Disclaimer: Of course, I might have completely misremembered my genetics classes LOL.) ;-)

ETA: Just did a quick look up and I was right it is recessive and so needs two copies of each gene, one from each parent, to produce a red haired child.

LOL @ ginger chins... my brother has dark hair, in the sun there are glints of red, he has...you guessed it...a ginger chin! So does my uncle and his son. It's believed to come from Mum's Dad's side. Mum used to have the most lustrous vibrant auburn hair but after the tamoxifen and arimadex for her breast cancer it has lost most of the red tones in it. Not sure where I get my mousy brown but I was honey blonde until I was about 18 and it gradually started to darken, also had a strawberry blonde streak. Not sure what colour my beard would grow PMSL

All my mothers sisters and one brother had red hair any mum and youngest brother had dark hair none of the childer or there children have red hair. On my oh side his gmother had red hair his aunt cousin his daughter and gdaughter all have it my three have dark brown Valxxx

my paternal aunt, cousin (her son), my paternal grandmother, paternal gt grandmother and several of the line going back are/were red heads.
my father WASNT although his sister and mother were.
my d i l has auburn hair and my grandaughter has strawberry blond hair.
i am always on the look out for the name DAWSON to see if they have red hair, because that is where the colouring comes from.
i have always been fair, getting darker as the years pass.
i thought that my children would be red as my ex husband has close family who were that colouring, but no they were blond.
