I watched some of the programme, Liz, and thought deeply about it, and decided that I have been drinking for about 50 years, and if I should stop now, my body would probably get...turmatised:-) My dog doesn't seem to mind so I had better keep going....lol BC XX

I don't mind a drink, on Valentine's night we had a bottle of red wine opened and I drank a glass, went bright red, face, cheeks and neck and my neck and throat itched for an hour lol!
Something telling me something?
I honestly don't get pleasure from drinking alone, o.h. secretly drinks (seems he has done it most of his adult life) and will have further problems if he doesn't stop as he has this blood vessel problem in his brain or head, seeing the specialist next week but he won't have me go in with him this time. I know why, cos he admitted to the specialist last time that he was drinking and I learned that he was consuming more than I realised. He doesn't want me to know if the specialist says he mustn't drink anymore. He is a candidate for a stroke even at 54 so should be more careful but if he won't listen, not my problem.
I used to drink as much as I wanted when out but since I had my son, I cut right back and he has only seen me merry a few times at weddings and parties etc. I know he drinks more than he should as do many young people out and about, and it worries me knowing how many more accidents happen when people don't have their wits about them. I just wonder if the binge drinking culture will ever change now, it wasn't that bad when I was young (sound a poor old dear now don't I?)
I have noticed the rest of that bottle of red has almost gone, and o.h. thinks nothing of drinking and driving, which again I can't do much about as I don't intend driving him to work at 6 am every morning of his early shift week, even if I am still up lol He doesn't seem to realise that if he has drunk a lot the evening before he will still be over the limit next morning.
Jenny, you are doing really well, and you too, Malc, good that you realise you are not helping yourself or doing yourself any favours by consuming that bit too much. Who wants to become dependent on a bottle of wine or a can of beer whatever?

I do wonder if the young binge drinkers are learning from the laxer attitudes of their parents re drinking alcohol at every opportunity.
Good luck all of you,
Lizx

I've never been a big drinker to be honest. I'll have a glass of wine at christmas and on special occasions but as I'm on so many different medications can't drink that much anyway...good job that I don't actually want to.

We did some stuff on how a glass of wine a couple of times a week can reduce your chances of stroke. But then what very few people realise is how fattening alcoholic drinks can be. Friend of mine stopped drinking and has lost a load of weight.

Gerri, with what you get thrown at you, love, I am not surprised you need a little lemonade...... in with your wine or vodka hon!

Liz, I know 'they' say that a glass of red wine is good for you but it is the people who sit alone and get through a bottle of wine a night, or the equivalent, who are probably causing themselves harm. It was interesting on the programme to see how shocked some of those women were when they saw their total weekly consumption stacked up on the table like that. I recorded the programme as I was busy with other things, when it was on, so knew I would miss bits. I want o.h. to watch it with me but he probably won't as he doesn't face up to his alcohol problem despite his father and sons trying to convince him he should cut back or stop. If he is put on further medication when he sees the specialist next week, I bet he still won't stop even if warned. He shouldn't be drinking now with taking the blood pressure tablets and the soluble aspirin.
I wonder if it was mentioned that some of those women might be over the legal limit to drive their kids to school the next morning? Also, are they if single mums, more likely to fall asleep with a ciggie in their hands, or not be aware that their children are calling for them or are unwell. I rarely drank if alone with my son when he was young, didn't dare risk it.
Take care everyone.

fortunately I don't drink alcohol - an occasional sherry at Christmas time and maybe a cocktail or two on holiday, but never drink alcohol in pubs

I have added a new thread as I am interested in how many people do drink more than they realise or more than the recommended amount per week.
No ulterior motives, and would be confidential, it is just something I am working on at the mo. I would really appreciate input and info.
Will explain later this month.
