except shifting things

so he couldnt get to them

Ah, a pre-owned dog can be hard work.

How old is she? If shes more than about 6 months, then it wont be easy putting her in a cage or kennel.

What breed is she?

The most common mistake that is made is by owners trying to discourage their dogs from chewing or being destructive by means of using mustard, offering treats as an alternative, etc. All this does is make the dog think it's MEANT to misbehave in order to get the treats or attention it craves. It then becomes normal behaviour.

The dog needs to know that it is right at the very bottom of the house pecking order. Discipline doesn't mean being unkind. Make sure that you eat first, and do it in front of the dog. Never let it out of the door before you, MAKE it walk to heel on the lead, sit before it gets fed, not allowed on chairs or beds, etc. etc. If you catch it misbehaving, a shake by getting hold of either side of the neck, not the scruff at the back, and maintain close eye contact while gently shaking, will let the dog know you are boss. The lesson very quickly sinks in.

Sounds like you will need a bit of luck as well though :-)

that remindes me of our dog that we got in 1987
she was a black lab x she was beautiful , but she cost me an arm and a leg she chewed a brand new pair of shoes never even been worn (mine) skirts trousers shirts you name it she chewed it to peices..
then one morn she went out in the garden and in half an hour she had chewed my swing settee to pieces
she just left the frame because she couldn't eat that .lol but i loved her to pieces . i threatened to take her back to the kennels.... she never done anymore damage it was though she knew what i was talking about lol

ian shes a cross, (no jkes she must be to chew stuff)
we think she got alsatian in her, tho she small like terrier,
shes coming up to one yeare old, we had her at 10 months, shes one in march, just after babes,
she loves everyone, kisses, cuddles, but is very playful, tell her off, and make her know,
so far shes learnt to stay in her bed at night, but she does get a bit sneaky like i say, at around 4am,
its like
wheey, everyone up time,

but she does get told without treats,
and i do leave her toys laying round thinking shell pick them

All you can do is keep at it.

Advantage of a cross is that they often take the best traits of all the breeds, lol. Sometimes less susceptible to illness and hereditary problems as well.

She sounds like a nice dog, so just persevere. If possible, ignore her altogether at 4am ( I know - not easy!) and she will get the message.

Other than that, its a case of her growing up!
