mum aged 60 to have a smear, 10 yrs ago she had 1st stage cancer the progresive type but the doctor was on holiday when the results came and the locum apparently filed the results without telling my mum, when her gp came back of holiday mum rang thinking its been 6 weeks they would be fine, to her horror after the doctor doing lots of phoningb around my mum was admitted for a cone biopsy, removal of the affected area, she had a few check ups every 3 months but when they gave her the all clear she wouldnt go back, she has said its not the smear but the results, ive thought about making the appointment my self i just dont know

I wouldn't like it if my son or anyone else made the appointment for me, Puss. But I would try emotional blackmail...it always works with me....Good luck. BC XX

It is scary waiting on result's, but she has got to get it done.
Ask her how she would feel if the shoe was on the other foot, I'm sure she would be talking you into it.

Tell her you will go with her and then have a day out or go for a meal after etc.
Take her for a spin in your scooter lol

Puss, I had the same thing as your mum, the cb, but 27 years ago. I always had my checkups which became further and further apart and now have to have the usual timed ones. It is so important for your Mum to go back regularly so I hope you can persuade her. Does she go to the doctor for it or the family planning clinic? I wonder if she hasn't been to the fpclinic before you could explain things to them and make an appointment, get her to go along as if it is for you, and when you go in take her in with you, so the doctor can explain how important it is to have the check and she might give in. I know it is sneaky but if appealing to her by emotional blackmail, i.e. you want her to be around to see your grandchildren etc etc, doesn't work, it might be worth a try. That is if the doctors there will agree to subterfuge. Or try talking to her doctor if the same one as yours, and see if they can get her to come in for a full health check or something.
Good luck,
Lizxx

Normally you can stop having the smear tests at 70, but if you have had abnormal smear tests, then I should imagine you should keep on going.

pmsl marion
liz ive thought on those lines , she would be so embarresed if i did that but i would do it, she has a female doctor who is lovely and down to earth, she treats mum for her bp, but...... she tried tricking mum before mum thought she was having a chek up but doc told her she wanted to do a smear mum said no, but promised to go back she didnt.
i could try emotional stuff like i will not take my tablets if she dosnt go, its so difficult were not a close family but we are friends and i dont want her to die because of this especially when i could have done something
thanks bc
lol mac i could pretend my stick is a gun i suppose xx

At your Mum's doctors,do they do have a nurse who does a MOT tests ie blood pressure, weight, height if they do have a word with the nurse and tell her your Mum is 60 now and see if she can persuade your Mum to have all the usual tests done +Smear test.

Good Luck

It sounds to me like she's scared of them finding a problem rather than being embarrassed.

Sue, no one told me lol - do I get a dishy young mechanic involved lol?

I suppose because I am at the doctor's fairly often due to the fm and stuff, they haven't bothered to suggest one but I will ask next time. Any twinges tend to be put down to my fm, or osteoarthritis, but I would like a full check over now and then.
Lizx
Funnily enough I have been trying to remember to arrange my smear test, I think it is due again soon. I go to our local family planning clinic for mine, it gets the young girls looking when I sit and wait for my appointment lol My own doctor, a woman, has a problem doing smears and doesn't always get them done properly so I save her the bother now, and me, when I had to go back for a retest cos she hadn't got enough cells to be checked on the wand.

Buttercup - you naughty naughty girl - get down the docs this instant and any others of you who haven't had a smear test - it's perfectly painless and could save your life - what if it was discovered, God forbid, as some stage you had cervical cancer - that would be far more difficult to deal with than just going for a smear. The facility is there thank goodness - use it!!!

~Summer Scribe~

~Summer Scribe~ Report 12 Feb 2008 15:45

I'm confused about my own smear lol. When I had my last one (ashamed to say my first) I was at uni and they said the next was in five years. But where I live now (back home) They do them every three years. They already sent me a reminder. Wonder if I should split the diff and go with four lol. In which case I should make the appointment now. Just a bit concerned as one of the nurses at our surgery was at school with me and I really don't want it with her.
