sorry I've run out of ideas..at least you know the site is working and George says his Virgin opened the application okay so other than a reboot to see if that sorts the issue I cant think of anything else to suggest

This what Virgin say...

You can't access a particular website
If you are experiencing problems with accessing any web addresses (URLs) or any Virgin Media services (such as e-mail, newsgroups, web services etc.), then you can try the following actions in order to help you diagnose the problem.

Please note: It is also useful to record any messages that you may receive, as this will provide valuable information to the Technical Support Team, should you later require their assistance.

Check the Virgin Media Service Status page
You can check our Service Status page here.

The Service Status page will give you the most up-to-date information about the status of Virgin Media services, as it is updated on a regular basis. There may be a known issue that is affecting your access to the Internet, which has been reported to us by other users. If this is the case, then it will be mentioned on the Service Status page.

Try to access another website
If you are still experiencing problems accessing the website that you want, try accessing a different website altogether. For example, you could try to navigate to http://www.google.com.

If the other website loads into your web browser and displays okay, then the chances are that the original website you wanted is experiencing problems. This is sometimes due to (temporary) problems on their web server, or if there is server maintenance being performed at the time. If you try to access your chosen website again in a few hours time, then you should find that it will load into your web browser just fine.

What to do if you are still experiencing problems...
If none of the above suggestions / actions help you to resolve your broadband problem(s), please ensure you have recorded the results of all the above tests that you performed, with as much information as possible. Then, you should contact the Technical Support Team and provide them with the information.

So looks like I'll have to call them :(((

Yes you have a router. Not my thing though. Ours sometimes allows emails in and out, but no web, only to upload. When that happens I turn the router off for a couple of minutes and then switch back on. Worth a try. Sorry can't help any more than that.
