Had my appraisal today. I had marked excellent for time keeping and training. Never ever late for work, had 1 day off sick in two years, cos Son had crash, plus 5 days annual leave when Stephen died. I got a good from boss, when I asked how this was, she said training downfall. I said I have always attended training on time, even on my days off. She said, yes but you had to leave one. It was about resussitation, (spelling) I could not stay as it made me think of the hour they spent trying to keep Stephen with us, and that has give me a bad mark, I think not, crap or what?

Crap day for you too. Yes that was understandable you couldn't stay. I think it's just an excuse not to give full marks they don't like to do that xxx Bless you Gillian

My boss was actually with me on the training that day, and watched me start to shake and then the tears flowed, I had to leave, she came with me, made me a coffee and spoke to me nicely, then this, I have to leave, they show me no confidence.

That is utterly disgusting Jennifer. Surely they should of taken into consideration the situation. Although when my hubby got out of the army he was going to join the ambulance service as a paramedic,( he served 24 years and did 20 as a medic) and he went and did all the written tests and passed them all 100%. When he went to do the practical exam, he was suffering with a dental abscess, and it burst the morning of the exam,
He did all the other parts of the exam but when it came to doing the resuscitation exam, he informed the tester what had happened and they wouldn't let him continue because, as they said, it might cause cross-contamination. Afterwards they told him that he would of got in, no problems, if he had done the resuscitation test. They told him to come back the following year. He got another job instead and didn't bother going back.

Some people think that rules and regs are more important than experience.

I am certain you can appeal against any points raised in appraisal that you don't think are fair. Ask them to review that issue as you had genuine reason for that.

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 5 Feb 2008 22:55

I agree with Muffy - you should be able to appeal this - but if it was just your appraisal did it have an impact on anything - ie salary or such. Could be your boss is inexperianced in these matters?

I just feel alone and unsupported at work, I really work hard, and do what is expected of me, I asked for the 18th of March off, as it will be two years since I lost my Stephen, and I ask myself how I am still here, but here I am, and work is so important to me, I give it 101% but obviously not good enough XX I got told they will think about it. I am having that day off, come what may. XX.

Helen1959 Report 6 Feb 2008 15:36

Jennifer, Have they given you the day off yet? I gather that you enjoy what you do, and job satisfaction is important, but it is not worth the grief that they give you if they are treating you like this.

It is awful not to feel properly valued at your job especially when you know you give it your all. I do hope you will get the day off you want with no hassle and that the boss will learn to appreciate you more.
Keep up your good work Gillian.

Appraisals should be a two way thing. Did they give you the opportunity to tell them what you were concerned with and were not happy with?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Feb 2008 15:49

I am sure you should be able to appeal. Do you just have the one person for your report or does she get it countersigned by her boss? You should be able to write in to appeal. In your appeal you could say this has made you feel undervalued.

i know how dedicated you are when i met you , you really need to tell her how you feel, bosses can be so selfish, mayby she knows your so good she dos'nt want to lose you thus keeping you feeling you have to improve befor e you could move on to something else or higher job,

When I was last in a proper job! my manager my peers and my staff all gave me points against various aspects of my performamce. I did the same for my staff and my manager....its called feedback! perhaps I should come around and teach them the purpose of appraisels and the importance of relevant, timely and 360 degree feedback Gillian

Oh Gillian, what an absolute crap way to treat hard working staff - I'm sure you would be welcomed with open arms in another post and it will be their loss - I can feel myself composing a letter in my head to give them when you say goodbye [and up yours]!!! You are worth so much more than that, you know it and we all know it - stuff 'em. Don't let it get you down, they have the problem, not you.
