Just checked my email and had this response the one I sent last night:

Dear Liz

Thanks you for your email. Please accept my apologies if this virus alert has caused you any worry.

There was an advert on the site which was inviting people to download an application. At that point your anti-virus software picked this up and warned you of the various types of viruses that could be contained.

This advert has now been removed from the site.

Best regards,

Rachel

Hmmm. Yet another stock reply it seems. And not exactly a proper explanation of what actually happened either.

Nudging this back up as I am still not happy that the Management have not placed a message on explaining things.

Maybe if GR had responded earlier then all the upset that some long term members ---like Jeannette--have gone through could have been prevented
Hya Jeannette---how are you today

Hi Ronald :)

Looking round the post it seems a few of us got the same fob off mail, this doesnt surprise me at all.

Its good to see the adverts currently off at this time on here in order to prevent more happenings.

All I can do is hope Genes do that announcement and keep us informed now.

Yeah, but............. I too received this morning, same E as Colin as I'd complained 3 times BUT a sister site "Connections" is still bugged. Went to site this morning and before I had chance to log on McAfee gave it the 'Red Card' and zapped 2 Trojans. I understand Friends Reunited is also so bugged

Hi All :)

Thank you for your responses to the thread.

I totally agree that Genes should be making an announcement on this rather then the fob of they have tried so far.

I was very concerned initially about a mass e mail going out to all members as I am sure Genes was.

To send out a mass email to all members would also have sent out an invite to everyone to visit a site that had a trojan problem on it. That would also have meant all those who visited who never had protection on their computers would also possibly have been infected the minute they arrived.

The missing adverts at this time also is only a temporary solution to everyone as what has been happening here is becoming more and more known on other large sites who use advertising.

Most of these sites use the flash advertising also and it is important that you should update those flash players before adverts re appear here to.

Please see the Flash Player Warning thread for details about this.

Genes themselves should be doing this but as usual
we see nothing .

Prevention is better then having to spend numerous hours on cure.

I guess we should be grateful for messages to those who emailed them about the problem - but I still think they should contact ALL member directly and explain what happened and how to fix it, if necessary.

The old saying "they treat us like mushrooms, keep us in the dark and feed us manure" is very true of Genes

Wonder who deleted the "Important" thread? My response from them yesterday was on it as was the one I sent back.

Basically, the one I had yesterday was virtually the same as the one I originally had on friday when they were in denial.

I wonder if genes deleted it or if it was Errol.

LOL, not the email I had yesterday and no response yet to my snotty reply lol. I guess that will come, all in its own good time.

Glad they're finally doing something but they should still have made an announcement. Very shoddy.

Hi Colin, thanks for relaying that to us. Like others have said, it wouldn't have hurt them to put an announcement up but at least it's sorted now, and hopefull we won't have any more problems.

I also had an email from GR saying the same. The time of the email was 11.23 this morning. I clicked to turn a page on this site at 11.32 and the thingumyjig was stopped by my anti-virus!

I have no adverts now so hope it doesn't happen again

Hi Colin

Many thanks for passing this message on. I too am appalled, not only by GR having adverts containing viruses but also by their totally uncaring attitude towards sorting it out (the adverts should have been removed on Thursday, not today!) and leaving GR members to sort it out between themselves!

I also note in their reply to you, Colin, they mention "what viruses could have been contained". No, sorry, it's not COULD have been, they definitely WERE contained!!

Thanks Everyone :)

Ive no doubt the adverts will be back sooner then we think.

Whilst everyone has done what we can do behind the scenes Genes need to advise on how to prevent this re occuring in the future.

Although they have removed the adverts at this time , this only prevents the re direction and the trojan from downloading. It does not offer security advice or a method of how to treat things now that the trojan has been allowed to access a computer or tell anyone what they should do now that they have been affected by this.

Im not happy about this
