I don't see anything for daughter Helen apart from the censuses.

A tree on Ancestry says she died
"about 2005 • Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland, USA"

The tree also says she married William C Foster and had several children - but no proof offered on the tree, and I can't find records to support that.
Doesn't mean it's not true, of course!

Thank you very much. I am not only researching on my behalf but for second cousins in New Zealand via the Dingwall/Douglas/Melrose connection and they will be delighted with this.
Thank you again

Kind Regards

Christine Report 21 Aug 2019 17:16

Hi Everyone
I would like some help with My Grandmothers family - Melrose. As you can see from this thread, and I have also got one relating to Hendry and another to McCarthy, I would like to trace some of the ancestors/descendants of my Grandmother's sisters and half brothers please.

The information that I have so far:
John Melrose c 1813 married Isabella Common on 18/01/1833 in Jedburgh Roxburghshire Scotland. They had a son James Melrose born c 1845 Galashiels who married Janet McIntosh 7/7/1868 Forfar. They had two sons John born 1869 and Robert born 1872.
Janet died 7/8/1881.
James Melrose married Helen Douglas (Dingwall), my great grandmother , 7/12/1883 in Tain. They had 7 children:
Jessie 1884, Isabella 1886, Helen 1887 (my grandmother,) Jemima 1889, Christina (Chrissie) 1891, Gavin 1891 and Duncan 1897.
I have information and have made contact with the grandchildren of Jessie Melrose married William Hendry, Angela McCarthy, Isabella married William Lightfoot, isabella Reid and Gavin Melrose married Evelyn Douglas Ironside, Geoff Baird. Both these sisters and brother emigrated to New Zealand.
My grandmother had a postcard collection and being a hoarder kept old photos and memorabilia which I inherited.

I have no information of the half brother John Melrose.
Robert Melrose was a witness at the wedding of Jessie Melrose and my grandparents. I do have postcards sent to my grandmother from Bob which I am assuming was from Robert. I have photographs taken outside my great grandparents home which include my grandparents holding my dad and Jemima holding a baby. This would have been 1921/22. there are several other older children in the photo which I am guessing could be the children of John and/or Robert. There is also evidence my GGM spent time with her Aunt and Uncle William Douglas and Helen Douglas so they could be her cousin's children.
Jemima Ann Melrose married Mark Sumner 1922. There are photographs of them with children but I have no information regarding them.
Christina Melrose married Anthony McDonald 1922 she was 30 and he was 40. They had a son also called Anthony - my Aunt spoke of Cousin Tony. In the wedding photo there are children so Anthony Senior could have been married before. I have no information about them.
sadly Duncan died at birth.
So to recap I am seeking information about Jemima Melrose m Mark Sumner and Christina Melrose married Anthony McDonald.
I found in my Aunt's address book some addresses in Scotland, as she left Scotland to live in London age 3 I am assuming these would be family. Not sure if it is relevant.
Mrs McDonald, 179 Mid Stocket Road, Aberdeen
Mrs M Sumner 88 Great Western Road Aberdeen
Mr D McIntosh Drumin lochan, Kincraig Invernesshire
Mrs E McKay, Logie Lodges, Lonmay Aberdeenshire
Pte J McKay 2822444, HQ COY 4 PLN (?), 5th Seaforths M.E.F
GNR R Melrose 7357769, Box 208, GPO Glasgow 8a Mount Street Aberdeen

I am not sure about the following:
my grandfather, Nicholas Fitzgerald de Ros was in the Rifle Brigade
RFN G Cameron, No 6914585, D Coy, 7th Battalion. The Rifle Brigade M.E.F . prisoner
Mrs Milton Tichy, 2816 Trumbull Chicago Illinois USA - my GGM's half brother emigrated to America - David Douglas Junior.

I have postcards to my grandmother from Canada from Peter but he could be a friend.

Sorry for such a long post but I was advised not to waste people's time with research that was already known.

So please bear with me and if you can find anything about anyone I would be most grateful.

Thank you

Christine

Re Christina -
I'm, sure I posted this before - maybe on the deleted thread?

To recap for our reference:

Birth:
MELROSE
CHRISTINA MARY
F
1892
209/ 2
Kincardine O'Neil (Aberdeen)

Marriage:

MELROSE
CHRISTINA MARY
MCDONALD
ANTHONY
1922
266/ 4
Nigg (Kincardine)

The only way to know if Anthony had been married before is to look at the marriage cert (6 credits on SP ) and see what info that gives.

Christina's death:

MELROSE [ also listed as McDonald ]
CHRISTINA MARY
58
1950
168/1 1299
Aberdeen Northern District

Possibly Anthony's death - just because it's in the same reg district as Christina's, but again, you'd have to see the death cert to be sure - another 6 credits on SP.

MCDONALD
ANTHONY
69
1951
168/1 711
Aberdeen Northern District

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Sep 2019 21:22

The son Anthony's death:

MCDONALD
ANTHONY
61
mms MELROSE
1993
301/ 189
Aberdeen

so this will be his birth:

MCDONALD
ANTHONY
M
1932
266/ 25
Nigg and Banchory Devenick

If you look at his death cert, you'll be able to find out if he married or not - and if so, possibly his child (if any) might be the informant. You'd have to buy a copy for £12 through SP - it's too recent to be viewable online.

Re Gnr R Melrose in the address book -

In 1950 the following Melroses are at 8a Mount Street:

Elizabeth, Margaret T, Muriel, and Robert.
Robert has S against his name, which indicates he was in the servies.

In 1955, Elizabeth, Margaret T, and Robert are at that address. No Muriel.
