Found this on Google about Thomas White's School. It was also a home, so maybe the other children were living there:-

----

In 1889 The Industrial School for Girls in Swanswell Terrace was pulled down and a new and larger building erected on the site, then renamed the Sir Thomas Whites School for Girls. The 1901 Coventry Directory lists the building as an "industrial home and school" with Miss Susannah Goulding as Superintendent and Mrs Annie Graham as Schoolmistress. The girls had a grey uniform and were often supervised by the Grey Ladies from St. Nicholas Street. In 1909 a new wing was added to the School and in 1916 the school was closed and the building, after conversion, added as an extension of the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. It was then known as the Sir Thomas White Block and contained four wards: a men's medical, a women's medical, a maternity ward and the eye ward.

Thanks Margaret.

I haven't been able to find any probable births for the other names under Hayward or Rooms. It is possible that the children were known by middle names, so it would be impossible to find them in this case.

Thanks a million everyone. I agree with you, this certainly looks like the right family. The only thing that puzzles me is where are the other siblings - we have accounted for Ethel and Maud and the Louisa M could be the May we are looking for, but where are Edith, Ida and Peggy ? I wonder whether these were children of Henry Rooms, born after the 1901 census, and not William Hayward. I will try on Freebmd. Thank you everyone.

I've just found the same birth as Shirley. You could order the certificate and stipulate that you only want the certificate if the father's name is William.

Perhaps Ethel was also born in Coventry and that is why she went back there after her marriage?

Margaret Report 25 Jan 2008 21:33

Shirley - Kathleen - yes that is her death. Bryan and Ethel moved to Coventry, obviously sometime after marriage. The fact that she married in Scarborough was the reason I was concentrating on Scarborough for the rest of her family.

KathleenBell Report 25 Jan 2008 21:31

No, it won't tell you a lot more, but William's occupation might give a clue to finding them in the census, and the witnesses might be other family members.

This looks like Ethel's death, so if the age is right her birth should be about 1888:-

Ethel Fields, age 30,

It possibly would be useful Kathleen, but would it tell me any more than I already know ie father's christian name? I don't think the mothers name is on there is it ?
