William Minney was my great grandfather, born abt 1 Feb 1877. He married Lilly (Lillie) Portch born abt 13 Jan 1878. They left the UK with their daughter Doris May Minney born 4 Sept 1907 in Birmingham, for South Africa when Doris was a child. |

What a lovely name. Have to say I cant see a Mark Minney in Brum, but there is a William. Do you know what his occupation was? This guy is a boot cutter |

Hmm, with names like that the marriage search should be easy but nothing showing yet - here is Doris May's birth ref though if you need to buy the certificate: |

Hi there, Just chatted to my Mom - (his granddaughter). She says he could have been William Mark rather. Just before he left England he drove trams but she says he was very good with shoes because when in South Africa he had a business in making and repairing shoes. |

Hi Heather, Thank you - that is my Grandmother's birth reference. Doris May Minney. Will get the certificate. I am not 100% sure of Lilly Porch's birth year (using my Mom's memory....and she is 78 LOL). Lilly could have been a Lillian because she was called Lill or Lilly. She had a sister they called Fanny - Mom doesn't know her real name though. We don't know where they were born. |

Oh wow.....now we have it. Doris was the only daughter of William and Lillie. Its William that had a sister called Rebecca and Lillie had a sister called Fanny. You have the right Lillie now. I will order Certificates - thanks for the website. I do subscribe to Ancestory.com and Genes reunited. Being new to this I have found it difficult to 'dig' but thanks - really. You don't know how you have helped me. |

Yes, Fanny is with Lillie in that 1901 census. I cant see a Rebecca with William though. It didnt help that you had a wrong spelling for Lillies surname. |
