a possible William in 1871....18 year old boarder at Canal St, Bootle (just up the road from Kirkdale). Born Wigan which covers Billinge and his occupation is Engine cleaner which is how engine drivers started out. What age did he give on his marriage certificate? |

- it's quite endearing, though, the vagueness that some of our ancestors adopt when encountering officialdom. I can see that the older inhabitants will start adding to their age as they get into their 80s and 90's - and 50 year olds either believing that they are as old as they feel (i.e. STILL YOUNG!), or perhaps trying to avoid ageism. And after all, the box doesn't give them the space to state that it is none of the business of the nosey state... |

dont take census age as to be the right age as some were rounded down to a whole nunber some up to whole number,,plus who gave the census information may not have been the man himself and who ever just gave est guess,,,,,,,,,1901 is a little more to be belived ,but yet again often is wrong,,, |

hi ivy .. the reason i was so cross was that on the 1891 census the groom was 40 and on the 1901 he was 45 so i thought the m c would resolve the age... kind of...and in this instance i KNOW i have the right people on the census which made it even more teeth grinding .. |
