Oh yes, not sure if you already have the 1871 info for Thomas and Hannah - but the only couple I found that seem to fit were living with Samuel and Mally Robinson in Lancs. Thomas is listed as "son" and Hannah as "dau in law". But no children with them. Not sure if this is your couple or not - any idea?

Sorry for delay - had some work to do.

I checked the census page for you and it looks like the employer was a Margaret Mackingtosh, age 59, single, head - address is 38 Cadogan Pl, Chelsea. She had 4 domestic servants living with her!

Alright for some, eh?

Regards, Athena

Athena, I think I will try the 1881 census where Elizabeth is a domestic servant. Do you have the name of her employer.

Kath, Seems not to be any of these.
Maybe the next step for me is to get the birth certs .to make absolutely clear who the parents were.

Many thanks. Margaret

These are the only Mary Robinson's born Clitheroe in 1869 +/- 10 years in the 1871 census:-

Name Parent or spouse names Birth Year BIRTHPLACE Relation Civil Parish County/Island

Mary Robinson Richard,
Margaret abt 1871 Clitheroe, Lancashire, England Daughter Clitheroe Lancashire

Mary Anne Robinson Richard,
Nancy abt 1865 Clitheroe, Lancashire, England Daughter Clitheroe Lancashire

Mary E Robinson John,
Margaret abt 1863 Clitheroe, Lancashire, England Daughter Clitheroe Lancashire

Mary E Robinson Ellen abt 1860 Clitheroe, Lancashire, England Daughter Clitheroe Lancashire

Is one of these "your Mary Ann Robinson"

Ok, I've located Thomas and Hannah on the 1881 Census in East Ham - no Elizabeth living with them there, so the entry I found for her working as a dom serv could well be the right one then.

Kath,
I don't think that is the case as I have the marriage cert of Thomas and Hannah.
Two years after Elizabeth there was another daughter Mary Ann born in Clitheroe lancs. Then a gap of 7 years before the next lot.
I can't trace Thomas for that 7 years.
have even checked the prison records!!!

Sorry, Margaret - could you give a recap of what has already been covered in the past so that we don't end up duplicating info you already have.

I'm confused - if Thomas wasn't her father then how is it that Robinson was her birthname? Do you know who her real father was? And I take it Hannah was not her mother either?

Margaret - she was a domestic servant. Not an unusual occ for a young girl but I wouldn't dismiss that 1881 entry just yet. Another thought is that her age of 24 yrs in 1891 might not be 100% correct either!

Would be helpful if we could find her actual birth record, or find the family in 1871.

Looking at the 1891 census, there is a 10 year gap between Elizabeth and the next sibling. Could Hannah be Thomas's second wife, in which case there would be a different mother in earlier census years?

Reg. Yes .
But I can't understand why she isn't in any other census.
She is a great deal older than her siblings.

But they sometimes lied about their ages in order to get employment, or often the employer guessed at the age of staff.

You'll see that she has the same occ as in 1891, too.
