Hey,
I am confused. I have found my great nans death certificate which confirms she was born Nov 1901 but i cannot find her birth certificate. She died in Hitchin Aug 1976 (Under the name of Margaret Jarvis) and was born in the Kent area. I remember a family member saying they thought she might have been born in a workhouse (possibley etching hill)
Does anyone know where i could look for workhouse records?
thanks

Even if she was born in a workhouse, her birth would still be recorded in the index. Could she have been born somewhere different? There are about 9 Margaret Bell births in the December qtr. of 1901, and more in the March qtr. of 1902 (in case she was registered a bit late).

The birth date on the death certificate could also be wrong as it depends on the informant's memory.

Unfortunately she would have missed the 1901 census which is the last one available for us to search if she were born November 1901. Have you found her marriage and bought the cert for her dads name?

You can google Goodmayes Hospital.
