Child,s name, Place and DoB, Parents name and Occupations*, Mothers maiden name, also who registered it

*Unless the child was illegitimate or born out of wedlock, the fathers name isn't always on it

What were their names and when and where born, Was it before 1901??

Diane Report 3 Oct 2007 22:53

Hi Lynsey
A full birth certificate will give the name of the child, where it was born and the date of birth. The certificate will also give the name and occupation of the father , the name and maiden name of the mother . The name and address of the informant is also given (the informant is usually the mother or father)

So in a nutshell if you order you grandad's birth certificate you will get his father's name and occupation and his mother's maiden name which should allow you to research them further

If you have the index details a cert. costs £7
http://www.gro.gov.uk
Do you have anymore details i.e where he was born or at least the area.

My grandad was born in Elham, Kent and i think all of his family were from the Kent area!
This is why i have hit a wall due to lack of information!

It looks to me as if Janice has found the only two with an Elham registration district.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ will show you the transcribed entries.

If you order online from the GRO here:-http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ you need to use the Vol and Page number as Janice said.

You really need your grandfather's birth certificate so that you can find his parents' names....then you need that couple's marriage certificate to find their fathers' names.
There is this registration on the freebmd site but you have no way of knowing, at the moment, if it is the correct one.

Births Mar 1896
Jarvis William Henry J Elham 2a 1014

Could this be the marriage then!
Name: Jesse Jarvis -- Margaret A Bell
Year of Registration: 1915
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's Surname: Bell
District: Elham
County: Kent
Volume: 2a
Page: 3478
You really need your grandads birth cert first to confirm the parents names ,then if this is the one a marriage cert. hopefully would give their age and fathers names.

I'm not far from Stanford.
Let me know by a direct message if you want anything checked in parish records at the library.

hey, sorry i havent replied for a while! I have now got my grandads birth certificate which says his father was William Jesse Jarvis and his mother was Margaret Ann Jarvis (previously Bell) although it doesn't give me any D.O.Bs for them!
So i have now ordered their marriage certificate which should hopefully give me more information!
Thank you very much for helping!
