It is not impossible that this happened. I would definitely say get the marriage certificate which will hopefully give you some details to follow up. Even if it does not detail the father, the witnesses can be useful as well as the address.

Let me know when you have it and I will look on the census.

Best Wishes

First of all let me say a huge thank you for all your help! I managed to track down my grandads father his name was William Jesse Jarvis born Apr-Jun 1891 in Elham, Kent.
The only thing i cant work out is margarets records.
She died Aug 1976 and i found her death record which said she was born Nov 1901. Now she was definently born in nov because it was near bonfire night but if she was born in 1901 that means according to her marriage certificate she married when she was just 14! Any ideas?
Thanks again

Here is the marriage details. If you ordered this cert it would give you their father's details and possibly an address to search the 1901 census with.

you can order from www.gro.gov.uk - charge £7 if you include the GRO reference which I am about to list

BELL Margaret A Jarvis Elham.2a 3478 3 1915

You do in order to get a certificate. On your grandad's birth certificate does it give you any other names for Margaret Bell, like Jarvis, formerly bell. Do you or your family have your grandad's birth certificate? If you send me his name I will check that the index definitely says bell as mmn.

You could send for the marriage certificate, this should have her father's name on it. You can hopefully then find him on the 1901 census with his wife, your nan's mother. It will also give you an address which you may be able to work on. Also, the witnesses to this marriage may be your nan's siblings again this would aid you

You can order the marriage certificate from

www.gro.gov.uk

If you do not know the reference I will look it up for you.

What year was your grandad born? Are any of his siblings born after 1911? These will have the maiden name on the entry. Her maiden name was not Bell then?

Hello,
Im new on here and was just wondering if anybody can help me. I am looking for my great Nan, her name was Margaret Bell and she was born Nov 1901, she died in Aug 1976 but i cant find her birth record ( i would really like to know her maiden name) I remember my grandad saying he thought she might have been born in a workhouse but i do not know where to look! She Married William Jarvis Who we think was born in 1896 (+/- 1 year) but i dont have any information on him either!! They were both from the kent area! Any suggestions or searches would be much appricated!
Many Thanks x
