I have been trying to find a few members of my family, but have been unsuccessful for the past four years - either that or I need to go to Spedsavers. I am trying to find a Peter MacGregor Chantler who was the father of my GG Grandfather Richard Chantler b 1861 Kentish Town. Richard's brother was John Alfred Chantler b 1858 in Gravesend, Kent mother being a Georgiana Hall who had remarried by 1881 a John Hill. John Chantler's father on birth cert is John Chantler? while On Richards marriage cert 1881 it states Peter Chantler and still living? I have tried all variations and in every crannie for this Peter including: Chantler/Chandler/Canter/Chaundler/Chauntler/MacGregor/ McGregor, plus trying to unravel why John and Richard had different fathers. I need guidance and reassurance that I am not going mad. |

Hello Jill I have looked into this one, but Peter would be aged about fiftyish in 1891. His family was living in St Pancras in 1881 and Richard was married in Marylebone. Thanks you anyway for your time much appreciated. Linda |

Hello Leigh With regards to Kentish town, I have tried the 1871 census looking for Richard, but he seems to have just been born there not lived there. In 1881 he was living in St Pancras under the surname of Chanter, but no mention of his father. It's like something is not quite right, that whatever it is is not hitting me between the eyes so to speak. Linda |

You are a life saver Leigh for looking, but the Birth Cert for Richard is also just as elusive. The only info I have is from the 1881 census - he was aged 19 and born in Kentish Town, and was a pianoforte tuner as was all the Chantlerss - thats it Linda |

Oh Leigh This is it - the 1881 census got it wrong - it reads as follows:- Georgiana Hill aged 44 Head maiden name Hall John Chantler aged 23 Son Richard Chantler aged 19 Son Maria Chantler aged 66 Mother Maria Chantler nee Hall was always thought as Georgiana's mother which she is. Maria married for the second time a George Chantler who died in 1878 - this is another ? who in blazes is George? anyway you found John Snr with John Jnr thats all that matters - You've been absolutely fantastic Leigh -my graditude to you - now for somemore unraveling which is all part of the fun. Once again thanks Linda |
