Hi to those who now me, Unfortunately, the virus's that hit my PC tonight have killed it. I only have half of my Windows left ... the virus's ate the rest. I can't access my computer AT ALL. I have lost everything. My Family Tree is gone. Thank Goodness I sent away for certificates, as I may have a chance of rebuilding the main structure again. I have shed a few tears this last couple of hours I can tell you. My main e.mail address has gone, so until a later date I can NOT be contacted via GC. I HAVE NOW CHANGED MY E.MAIL ADDRESS, SO I CAN BE CONTACTED DIRECT. For those of you who knew about my Hot Male account then I can still be reached on that, as I have set that up here on my mates PC. ANYONE that I was in the middle of helping, please forgive me as I won't be able to continue the search for you, it could be at least a week before I can get my PC re formatted and all the programmes etc put back on and up and running again. Until the other day, I wasn't in a position to back up my PC. Then, when I had the chance I didn't do it. It's too late now. Please, if anyone can learn anything from my misfortune, PLEASE back up your PC / Family Tree as often as possible. Also, NEVER turn your Anti Virus and/or Firewalls OFF ... they are there for a reason. Elaine. |

Elaine Just re-read your posting about e-mail and I see you have (inadvertently, but possibly Freudianly) put Hot Male instead of Hot Mail. So it's not all bad news... :-) Nell |

Elaine what version of windows were you running? If it is XP and it was pre installed some manufacturers restore disks offer different levels of recovery. Starting at the lowest they can restore the system and not delete files. They are not all like this. Bob |

Oh dear, this reminds me when I had a virus last year, it knocked my anti Virus out also all my miain programs. Fortunately my son was able to save my tree and a few other things which were so important. I learnt like you the hard way. I NEVER NEVER turn off my fire wall or anit virus. I never open emails if I don't know who they are from and the subject does not relate to anything I am doing. Never show your emails on screen you can click that off so you only open what you want. You should only have the subject and the name of the person sending the email. If you are not sure about an email delete it but there is a way of viewing it without opening it. click once on the email so it shows blue, NOT TWICE as you don't want to open it (try it on one that is safe first so you get the idea) then go up to file click properties you should have come up a message box click on details and then message source you can then scroll down and see it you should delete it. Saved one or two this way. So friends when you are sending an email make sure you put in the subject box something that will make yours stand out. Sorry to anyone who has not had a reply as I do have a lot of rubbish sent to me and I delete 95% of mail, so I may not have seen or recognised yours. Irene |

Hi everyone, Firstly, THANKS for all the messages of sympathy and understanding. It was my own stupid fault ..I should have listened to my own rule. "IF in doubt, the answers NO " ...I was umming and arring for a couple of hours before I went for it. I have (hopefully) changed my e.mail address back on here now, so I should be able to receive e.mails again direct ? I'm walking round in circles back at home, not knowing what to do with myself. I keep sitting at my PC desk and staring at the monitor ... sad aren't I ! I've been told I can come back here to my mates tonight ... so I will be back to see who doing what ! I miss my friends ! .. Elaine :-) I run XP .. it was while trying to do the restore bit that I realized something was seriously wrong .. it stopped for 3/4 hr and would'nt do anything. Thats when I knew Windows wasn't working ... opened up in safe mode etc ..still wouldn't do as I asked. I've had PC's for some 20 years now, and have learnt a little bit ! I even built mine from box, motherboard etc, built it up and put it together. I accept ALL help and advice cos these PC's are bigger than all of us !! E. Must go, friend having visitors ! |

Oh Nancy, Thanks for making me laugh !! Thats one of the best things about this site, always someone around to pick you up when your down. The death certificate has been written out and the Pathologist suggested the quickest way you get over my recent loss is to have another baby. Mind you, I get a bigger better system next time round, apparently I was getting ready for an upgrade! Its what to do while your waiting for its imminent birth ?? My mate has gone out and left me in her house for the night ... so I can sit and watch and at least be in the room so to speak ! Thanks Nancy ...and Thanks to everybody else as well. Elaine :-) |

Hiya, Firstly, AMANDA, your offer of 1837 lookups is truelly amazing and generous, I really appreciate the thought and generousity involved, however, I did grow out of 1837 some time ago for my own research and having spent near on a thousand pounds it was one of the few things that did get backed up.!!! The only info re: 1837 that I have lost are recent look ups for others which I obviously downloaded and saved on PC so as to help others with 1837 Saved Pages ...which reminds me ..I will have to delete the offer since I no longer have the pages ..oh no :-( Thanks so much though Amanda, your a good un ! Cheryl, ........ I know you will help if I need it THANKS for being there. Luckily, I spent a fortune on certs as well, so if I ever get 18mths to myself, I will have to wade through the millions of certs and try and put them in some sort of assemblance and rebuild the main structure of my tree again ! Not a task I am looking forward to. Its the small branches that I was just starting to research that are the problem,.... however .. because I hadn't done a lot of research on them, I haven't lost a great deal I suppose. I need to sort everything out, then everyone will know I'm back cos I will have trillions of requests up on the board !!! (only jokin folks !!) Thanks Cheryl. x Elaine :-) |

Cheers Shan, I know you will help chuck. I'm not too bad really, at least I have certs etc to fall back on, so its just a case of patching my Family Tree back together again ...thats my main concern through all this ... grieving over lost rellies !! that I never met !! loosing them once to find them was not too bad, but to loose them all over again hurts !! Anything else that was on my PC falls into insignificance considering !! I'll get there ... one day ! Thanks Shan, much appreciated, nice to know that folks like you are only a request away. Elaine :-) |
