I cretainly do not think this family knew how to count as the info given in the 1881 census (found on LDS) does not match up with the info given on the 1871 census! The ages don't tie up for Peter and Jemima, but same address and same names, so I come either from a family of liars and cheats or family that can't count, lol Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability Peter RACKHAM Head U Male 56 Lowestoft, Suffolk, England Veterinary Surgeon Jemima SPARROW Boarder M Female 50 Raveningham, Suffolk, England Alphea SPARROW Boarder U Female 18 Lowestoft, Suffolk, England Silk Finisher Gertrude SPARROW Boarder Female 12 Lowestoft, Suffolk, England Scholar Amy SPARROW Boarder Female 5 Lowestoft, Suffolk, England Scholar --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the National Archives site there is an entry for Peter Rachkam living in Northumberland too so he could have moved up there later....need to pay to view this image so I think I'll have a go at the birth records first.

Can't find Samuel on 1881 or death but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Must dash. This is sooooooooo interesting. Tricia

My my! So I have got some skeletons in my upboard! This gets better and better. So perhaps poor Gertrude did not know who her real father was if that was the case, hence her putting down Frederick and deceased!

Oh, my goodness, have you spotted the naughtiness, Ann and could explain why Gertrude 'disowned' father. On 1871 Mr Peter Rackham is a veterinary surgeon boarding with the Sparrow family. On 1881 The Sparrow family minus Samuel is boarding with Peter Rackham Mum and family ran off with the lodger!! I'll check for possible sightings of and or death of Samuel and then must feed family.

Now then Tricia ...I've just spent ages trying to locate Flirty Gerty and can't find her ...not on IGI OR 1881 ....???? maybe I've been sat at PC too long today !! Also checked for Annie E Sparrow on IGI there are several, so no news there ! Sorry girls, I've flunked out !! Son screaming for tea, so good time for me to bow out !! Good Luck Ann, fingers crossed that this jigsaw falls into place ! Elaine :-)

The only Annie E Sparrow Suffolk on 1871 is in household of a John Willis so hold that thought. Of course, Sparrow could be her married name. If you look on 1881 Gertrude is with mother Jemina and siblings in lodgings. . Again, she is the only one that fits.Jemina is down as married but no husband there. Tricia

I am starting to think that my ancestors liked to have assumed names lol. Was wondering if perhaps old Gertie lied about her dad on the birth cert? She could have even lied about her age...guessing if she was younger than 18 she would have had to have asked the father's permission. A witness at the wedding was a Annie Emily Sparrow, I found a possible record for her. Thinking of buying that cert and maybe it will turn out to be a sister of Gertrude or an aunt...

There is only one entry for a Gertrude age 1 in Lowestoft and her father is Ostler but his name is Samuel!!! She has a brother called Frederick

Ann Report 11 Oct 2004 17:18

This is the bad news for George's father the name is also George which may mean the John Page family doesn't make sense. The father's occupation is also blacksmith. For Gertrudes father he is deceased but his occupation is showing as Ostler. Maybe this isn't the one as if the wedding was 1886 and he was 20 years old then...grrr, but I have a good feeling about this one, mother's name being Watson and all. Gertrudes father was Frederick Sparrow

Ann Report 11 Oct 2004 17:07

Managed to find the GRO refrence on 1837online thanks to your info. I am going to order the birth certificate and hopefully will learn even more from that. I am so excited! I didn't expect to get this far as my grandmother was estranged from her family years ago.

And there's more ... but I would take it , again, with a pinch of salt. Another entry on IGI, from 3rd party. Millicent Margaret Page b 1844 Dalston, Cumberland. ...same parents as George Watson Page .. John & Margaret, so they could be brother and sister. Nothing coming up for Sparrow .. but I'll keep searching ! Elaine :-)
