I am still looking for the marriage of John Joseph Bennett or it could be John James Bennett to Elizabeth Conley around about 1900.Possable Manchester area. I cannot find anything on John James, no birth, death or marriage. He is on my grandmothers birth certificate as John James, and on Elizabeth his wifes? death certificate as John Joseph. Can anyone help this is driving me mad Rhonda

Where have you already looked? Have you found them on the 1901 census (thereby confirming they were in the same household)? What has made you think the marriage took place around 1900 possibly in Manchester?

Hi Jools We have looked everywhere and cannot find John Bennett. 1837. ancestry.1901 census. We think it might be the Manchester area because his wife? Elizabeth was born in Oldham and on all the childrens birth certificates they lived in Ashton St, Salford, Manchester. He was also a greengrocer that had a stall near Tibb St Manchester. We no all this but cannot find a birth, marriage or death for him. We even no that Elizabeth was married before and the year she married but there is nothing for our great grandfather John Bennett. Thanks Rhonda

Rhonda

Rhonda Report 8 Dec 2004 23:03

Tracy I don't no when John was born but I no that Elizabeth was born the twentyfirst december 1874. And she married a John William Conley in 1894. She then went on to marry I think John Bennett and have 5 children with him. Rhonda

Rhonda - in the light of Elizabeth still being a Conley in 1901 - have you checked 1837online for a Bennett marriage between April 1901 and the birth of the child in 1904?

Rhonda

Jools, My cousin and I have been looking on 1837 and can't find them on there. Elizabeth we found and have birth and death certificates for her but It's John that's causing the problem. Rhonda

It's not on FreeBMD - I checked :)

DITTO Rosemary. Mind you - shouldn't that be "there shouldn't have been a marriage" - it's quite possible there was one (as you and I both know from searches we've done for other people) Rhonda - have you established that John Conley died before the birth of the Bennett children - he may not have done. Also consider that Elizabeth and the Bennett man may not have married (or married much later in life) - if she was irish, could she have been catholic and could this have had any relevance to her marital status

Rosemary, I have tried free BMD and I still have a few credits left for 1837. so far I have used up £30 of credits and still can't find my John Bennett, maybe it's time to give up Rhonda
