You could be right about the spelling - I think it should be Blackfriars !! But I'm not 100% sure - could be why I'm having trouble finding the place on 1901 .......LOL Regards Esta and the fact I'm not sure what area of London it is in !!

What was his occupation Esta? I have found a possible on 1901 online, George Stanning 18, Soldier, born Lambeth Surrey. On Ancestry this individual is transcribed as Stenning, but on the image it is definitely Stanning, maybe he used his middle name.

HI All, Before anyone goes off chasing this man let me just tell you what I have: Alfred George Stanning was born Islington / Hackney of Lodon in 1881. I have his death cert for 1901. Poor chap died as a result of a fall from the 5th Floor of the Royal Hotel, Blackfriars Bridge where he worked as a porter. He died on the 2nd April - and as the census was taken 31st March I was just trying to see if I could find him either in hospital or at work. I realise I was unlikely to find him but as I don't know any details of when the accident happened I thought I'd give it a go..! Would still like to find the hotel to double check he's not there but can't seem to find it.........!! Happy New Year Esta

Have just done an address search for Royal Hotel on the census.pro.gov site - the only one that comes up and looks likely to be the Blackfriars Bridge area one is shown as unoccupied on census night, so I guess he wasn't there! Details are: Royal Hotel Buildings, Parish of Bridewell, City of London, Ward of Farringdon Without. S:>

Esta I'd have thought that a fall from the 5th floor would have killed him instantly so unlikely to have happened a few days before to land him in hospital on census night! Having said that I haven't been any more successful in finding him anywhere else on census night either! Lou

Hi Susan, Thanks for trying to find the Hotel for me - I was getting nowhere fast. I will keep a note of it. Hi Lou It was a bit of a long shot weather he could be found on census night..with the dates being so close ! Just wanted to eliminate all possibilities..! If he was going to be anywhere I'd have put money on him being in the hospital..! At least you have helped rule him out of the census as I know he wasn't with family..! Thank-you all once again- Happy New Year Esta

Hi Leigh, Of course you can ask !! The cert doesn't actually say what district Blackfriars is in..! The inquest was held by the coroner for Westminster The cert reistration district is Strand. ( My London geography is rubbish !! ) Esta.

I know Lyla it's got me thinking all sorts. Finding a newspaper article is my next step...It's just getting to Westminster Archives.... Very helpful people who have already told me the inquest papers haven't survived and that Looking in the local paper of the time is a good bet for finding more info..! I just have to be patient ( Not my strongest point ) ...But I can't wait to know the full story.:) Esta

Hi, Just thought I'd add that Blackfriars Road runs up to Blackfriars Bridge and is in the borough of Southwark, although it may have come under Newington in 1901.(all south of the river.)

Leigh, I'm gobsmacked........Absolutly lost for words..!! I've had a look at the image...It's him. You've found the poor chap alive on census night....WOW As he died 2nd April the accident must have happened 31 March - 2nd April....and most likely on the 1st April 1901. OH....how wish I could get to Westminster Archives..NOW. Thank- you Esta :)
