Steph a) it sounds like you applied to the local register office, not the GRO. The ref with vol & page etc is a GRO ref, no use to local offices, BUT as Victor says, you should be able to get the cert from the GRO online details in his thread. b) get the cert first, to see if there is a father named. c) bastardy bonds etc info will be at the county records office. Before the welfare state, people in need applied for support to the parish. In the case of an illegitimate child, the parish in turn would question a mother to find out who the father of her child was. You may find details of an 'examination' or interview with the mother. BUT she may have been supported by a man and therefore not applied to the parish for help. nell

Bastardy Bonds is the old fashioned name for 'maintenance'. The father (if known and caught up with) MAY have had to pay Bastardy Bonds (maintenance). I don't know where or how you find the info ... hopefully someone else will be able to enlighten you further. Dancer x

Steph Here is the reference Margaret Walsh Quarter Sep 1905 District Liverpool Vol 8B Page 241. If you send to the GRO address http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp It will only cost £7.00 and this reference is their reference so it will match. Victor

The girls name was margaret walsh. This is what happened her mother left her husband and already had about 4 children. Then she had margaret in liverpool with another man. I found her birth the volume and page but when i sent for it they said they couldn't find it and would have to sned off to another place in southport. I have been trying to look for her baptism because it states the parents on the baptism...what are bastardy bonds?

Steph You need to get the birth cert to see whether or not a father is named. If you give details of the person's name and rough idea when/where she was born, perhaps others can find it. nell

Have you tried looking to see whether any Bastardy Bonds exist for her? If the father was made to pay maintenance for her, he would be named on those Lou

How do you know she was illegitimate if you can't find her birth certificate? What year are we looking at for the birth?

If there is one on her marriage, it's likely to be a made-up one. She may say the right one, but it's not often that happens.
