Hi Gill / Lea. Did anything come of this thread - Frank Herbert Hughes / cemetery records for Greenway Road? I believe the aforementioned to be my great grandfather wh I have been looking to research without much success. He lived at 59 Greenway Road around this time. Regards Roger

He was at 59 Greenway Road in 1939, with wife Fanny and son Frank N.

Is it ONLY his burial you are looking for?

What research have you done thus far?

Have you worked back from yourself using free-to-all BMD records - and purchasing certs to verify?

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

You say you ‘believe’ the named man to be your relation. What leads you to this supposition?

Have you tried contacting Halton Borough Council, who operate the local cemeteries, including Runcorn Cemetery - entrances on Greenway Road and Langdale Road ?

[email protected]

ADDED:
Deceased Online apparently has all the Halton BC cemetery records - although Frank's name doesn't appear on a free search.

???
Burial Register summary
last name - Hughes
Burial date - 19 May 1945
Location - Cheshire

ADDED MORE:
The burial above is NOT Frank's, per ErikaH's later post (at 13:42) , showing that Frank died in June - therefore obviously not buried in May.

But it could still be worth while contacting Halton Borough council, especially now that you have Frank's date of death - see ErikaH's post .

Walter James Hughes died in 1974 in St Asaph district, Flintshire, which fits with marriage of Hughes and Pointon in 1969

Incidentally, Herbert Mye(r)s on 1939 with the Hughes family was the father of Bessie

Roger

Roger Report 14 Jul 2025 22:28

Hello and thanks everybody (particularly Erica) for all your extremely helpful input, details and advice. The details all accord with my knowledge of my great grandfather FH Hughes of 59 Greenway Road. Thanks AG for contact details for Halton BC with whom I will make contact to find the location of grave of FH Hughes believed to be in Runcorn Cemetery also on Greenway Road.

Roger

Roger Report 14 Jul 2025 22:38

My ultimate interest is in relation to FH Hughes’s military service in WW1. Unfortunately beyond the above census information I have nothing at all to go on - no information concerning enlistment, regiment or service records etc. if anyone has any knowledge of enlistment generally during the First World War in the Runcorn area that would certainly be of interest to me. Thanks Roger

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Jul 2025 23:26

Unfortunately, the majority of WW1 service records have not survived.

Maybe ??? -

Francis H Hughes
in the UK, British Army World War I Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
Name Francis H Hughes
Military Date 1914-1920
Military Place England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, United Kingdom
Regiment or Corps The Royal Welsh (Welch) Fusiliers
Regimental Number 55438

Enlisted 8/12/1916.
Discharged 22/5/1917

No other identifying details on that card.

EDIT:

NO - from another record, that man's middle name was Henry.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Jul 2025 09:43

What information do you have which leads you to think he served during WW1?

No records on FMP which fit his details, although as AG so rightly says, only around 30% of WW1 records actually exist.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 15 Jul 2025 09:58

If there is no medal card then it is unlikely that Frank was in the Army. Presumably the FMP search means he didn’t serve in the Navy either.

Not everyone served in the armed forces. He could even have been sent down the mines.

Could his occupation indicate that he may have been in a reserved occupation. Have you checked the electoral rolls - if the occupant is named then there is usually a mark to show that they were away in the services.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Jul 2025 10:28

He was a Shop manager - as per Census and Register records posted above

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 15 Jul 2025 11:27

Ok - only glanced through.

If the electoral rolls doesn’t give a clue then the Lives of The First World War .org seems to have a list of conscientious objectors which would need checking, just in case. Might also be worth checking the local papers to see if his name crops up.

Well never know if he didn’t serve because he failed the medical for something that seems quite insignificant to us.

Added: the Cheshire Archives have the 1911-53 reports and balance sheets for the Coop.Something may show up in those. The Runcorn Historical society has a copy of the Coop centenary book which goes from around the 1860’s. He could crop up in that.
