Vicki what area were they living in on the 1861 census and could you tell us where it says they were all born. It would help to try and pin down the marriage Mary

If you are searching on FreeBMD, then you won't find James's birth on there because he was born before the start of Civil Registration (1837), and because FreeBMD is not yet complete, the marriage entry probably hasn't been transcribed yet. You can search through the GRO indexes, on 1837 online, or on microfiche at a records office / large library, and you should find a marriage entry for James, but the only way to get his wife's maiden name would be to get the marriage certificate. Or if you get one of the children's birth certificates, that would give you her maiden name. This could be James' baptism from the IGI (on FamilySearch website): JAMES HENN Male ------------------------------------------------------------------ Event(s): Birth: Christening: 12 DEC 1824 Ingestre, Stafford, England Death: Burial: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: WILLIAM HENN Family Mother: JANE Kate.

That 1848 marriage is on the IGI too, with wife's name given as Ann Lewis. Kate.

What about this one: Jane Smedley? Right place, right time. Marriages Jun 1855 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HENN James Burton 6b 331 SMEDLEY Jane Burton 6b 331 Only real way to double check is to get the daughters birth cert.

Vicki, Civil registration only began in 1837, so there will be no birth certificate for James Henn. With regards to the marriage entry, where are you looking? On FreeBMD (which is not complete) you get possible spouses, but you have to try and work out which one is correct. If you are using 1837online or the GRO fiche for marriages, then each spouse is listed separately in the index, I’m afraid, - finding one will give you no clues about the other. I assume you have tried the LDS site, - familysearch.org - and there was nothing on there to help you? If you can find the birth registration for his daughter Clara and buy her birth certificate, it will tell you the maiden name of Jane. Jay

Anyway, in answer to the marriage part of your original question, yes, you are looking for two marriage index entries for the same quarter with matching districts, volume and page numbers. The trouble is that in the early days there were 4 marriages to a page and later on 2, so that you will usually get back 8 names or 4 names and have to work out which groom married which bride! Some counties have their own BMD sites which will give you the answer, but many don't yet. Kate.

It might be worth looking for James on the 1851 to see if he is married then or not. Back soon if I find him! Kate.

Looks like James was married previously? 1851: I have looked up Jane Smedley and she is working in Burton as a servant. Yes, looks like him, so it looks as though he had a first wife Ann Lewis and Jane would be his second wife. So looks like James married Ann Lewis 1848 and then Jane Smedley 1855. But the only way to really know is get one of the girls certs. And what happened to poor Ann and baby Alice?

Looks like we all have found the same information. I too was looking at the 1851 census with Anne Lewis as Wife. It would appear he did marry twice. I could not see any trace of Alice on the 1861 Census though has anybody else traced her Mary
