Shelley & Jess, I note that Jess refers to a Road Man as a 'navvy'. I'm not sure when this term became generalised to include road workers, probably by the time of the 1901 census, so no quarrel there. Originally, of course, a navvy was involved specifically in building the Navigational Canal system, which was mostly completed just as Railway came into it's own in the mid-1800s...J.

A tip for you dont assume that people know what you do-I had no idea if rye was sussex ( i dont do geography) and whilst i was waiting for you to confirm remember, i looked up the birth ? You replied that you knew THAT - I didnt know that you know that and nearly turned tail and left you to it! Jess
