Selena in South East London

Selena in South East London Report 17 Nov 2005 22:04

Hello Jess, don't know if you can help. I am looking for Jane SHELL on the 61, 81 or 91 census. Jane was born Jane Teape in Ireland around 1812 (father William Teape). She married Elijah Shell in 1837 in Deptford, Kent In 1851 Jane, Elijah and family were living in West Ham Essex. Her children were Elijah, Mary, Ann, William, Jane Husband Elijah dies in 1853 in West Ham Her son Elijah moves around a bit but ends up in Deptford. Jane is not with him on 61, 71, census. I may have Jane on 71 census as a lodger in Lewisham mistranscribed as Sheil, born Ireland age 60. Lewisham next door to Deptford. I think Jane dies in 1893. I have looked on family search for 81 but no luck. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Jess Could you hunt down Frances Barnett b. 1840 Pitton, Wiltshire. She is not with her family in 1851. Parents James and Ann Barnett (also nee Barnett) living with their three other daughters in Pitton. She doesn't seem to be in Wiltshire. Maybe staying with relatives elsewhere. I can't see that she died either. Cheers Anna

Sorry Jess, that's all i know about my Reece men, if i could find where they are in 51 i was hoping it would lead me to more family, the only possible lead (if you can call it that) is that in 1891 George Thomas Reece was 81 and living in St George the east, and states he was born Bristol Somerset, i know Bristol is in Gloucestershire, but that's what it says. Many thanks Belle.

Thanks for responding Jess. I don't know of Jane remarrying -hope she didn't!' I am just hoping a Jane Shell, born Ireland around 1812, would jump out at you. I don't have death certificate but age is not too far out and Greenwich would cover Deptford. If you need any more info please yell at me. Thanks again, Selena

Hi Jess, Thank you for your very kind offer of help. I cannot find my great, great grandfather on either the 1891 and 1901 censuses. John Atkins, was born 16th October 1870 in Portsea. He came from a family of fishermen so perhaps he could have been at sea on the '91 and 1901, but his brothers were all around so I don't know why he wasn't. His 'wife' was Alice Amelia Cole - I say 'wife' because I have yet to find their marriage details, it is possible that the records were destroyed in WW2, as one of the major churches here in Portsmouth was bombed and all records destroyed. They had six chidren that should have been around in 1901, John 1892, George 1893, (my great grandfather), Alice Louisa Adelaide 1895, Sarah Ann 1897, Thomas Gordon 1899 and James Herbert born 1900 but he died in the Sep Qtr of 1901. I have found Alice (his wife), in hospital on Census night 1901, and one of the children, Sarah is with a relation. As for the rest of them - Who Knows!! Many Thanks for ANY help you can offer. Best Wishes, Julie
