Hi, Donna, What was his name? Could he have been entered on the CWGC site under a slightly different name? Jay

Heather Report 9 Feb 2006 17:22

My grandad was in the same lot at Jutland! Though he died in the 1930's. There is a website for Battle of Jutland - have a google - there was, I remember a list of casualties on it. I paid a researcher to get grandads stuff for me at Kew. He even turned up an identity card with a very grainy photo of grandad on it (he died before I was born). It also gave his medals etc.

Here you go, a site with over 6,000 men listed: http://www.fhindexes*co*uk/jutland*htm Replace asterisks with full stops.

I just put Battle of Jutland, roll of honour My grandad was on HMS Rollcall - he was a fireman. It was just a little fire tug I believe. It must have been terribly frightening to have been there at all but on a little tug amongst all that pandemonium! Actually I dont think that was the site I originally found, looks like they want £1.99 to get the info (which is still a bargain). Carry on googling, there were dozens of sites on the Battle - the biggest one in naval history I believe.

The casualty list for the Battle of Jutland will not include your relative, if he didn't die until 1917. The Battle was in May 1916. Reg

I was just going to ask that, as I cant see your ancestors ship on the losses list: Do you think he may not have died in this battle but later on? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ships Lost Type British German Battlecruisers Queen Mary, Indefatigable, Invincible Lützow Pre-dreadnought Battleships - Pommern Armoured Cruisers Defence, Warrior, Black Prince - Light Cruisers - Wiesbaden, Elbing, Rostock, Frauenlob Flotilla Leaders Tipperary - Destroyers (RN) / Torpedoboats (IGN) Nestor, Nomad, Turbulent, Ardent, Fortune, Shark, Sparrowhawk V48, S35, V29, V27, V4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- British Casualties in Ships Sunk Ship Killed Wounded Prisoner Total Queen Mary (blown up) 1266 6 2 1274 Indefatigable (blown up) 1017 - 2 1019 Invincible (blown up) 1026 1 - 1027 Defence (blown up) 903 - - 903 Black Prince (blown up) 1026 1 - 1027 Warrior 71 36 - 107 Tipperary 185 4 8 197 Nestor 6 8 80 94 Nomad 8 4 72 84 Turbulent 96 13 - 109 Ardent 78 1 - 79 Fortune 67 2 - 69 Shark 86 3 - 89 Sparrowhawk 6 - - 6 Total: 5,672 65 177 5,914

Donna, I looked at some newspapers for another genes member and found a write up of the battle in the local paper - and a week later, a list of local people killed - with photographs. Where did he live? Is this a possibility to get you more info? Jim

I know this is a silly question but this is not him is it, O'LEARY Initials: T Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Leading Seaman Regiment: Royal Naval Reserve Unit Text: H.M.S. 'Egmont III' Age: 37 Date of Death: 26/09/1918 Service No: 2167/C Additional information: Son of Denis and J. O'Leary, of Kinsale; husband of Julia O'Leary, of Worlds End, Kinsale, Co. Cork.

Apparently all the men who served at that Battle were given a replica of a ship in a glass case and also some sort of Life belt thingy - I cant be more accurate as my 80 year old aunt was only a toddler when she remembers seeing these things. It may be that whoever gave you the date had a lapse of memory re the date as the Battle is something you would remember if not the actual date?
