hiya karen, my only conclusions that the reasons you cant find them, is that they are badly mistranscribed, it doesnt seem that they moved out of the area, as you have them on '71 census, OR the census return was lost damaged for essex st in '61. the only thing i can suggest is to go thro' the 61 cen, for Stepney, but there is alot of districts. regards Julie sorry that i couldnt help further

1871 Census I have John Greaves age 56 Comb maker. Mary wife age 58 . Charles age 14. 40 Essex St. 1881 I found Hy Benjamin Greaves with his wife Ann at Philpot St. Hamlet after that he disappeared.
