im going round in circles and am starting to loose the will to live now! my great grandfather was John Aspin married to Ada Gertrude Foley. John was born to parents James Aspin/Aspen and Elizabeth smith. this i know for sure. James was born abt 1841 in Burnley, lancs according to info on the 81. 91 census. i cant find the marrige cert for james and elizabeth nor can i find her death or his. She died between the 81 and 91 census'. dont know when he died. They had two other children that i know of, thomas born abt 1880 (blackburn) and sarah ann born abt 1875 (burnley) i cant find james on the 51 or 61 census. i have a possible sighting on the 71 census but arent sure. i have no one to ask on this side of my family as my grandfather (johns son) died when my mum was 3 wks old so i have very little to go on. can anyone see the marriage of james and elizabeth? can anyone see the death of elizabeth between 81 and 91? can anyone see james on the census proir to 1881? any help would be greatly appreciated. maybe i have missed them but i think i need a fresh pair of eyes now! lou

Hi Louise, just checking 1861 image now. Confirmation of the eariler ones would really be by getting his marriage and then birth cert to confirm parents names. Wondered if Elizabeth Smith might have been married before as she was in her thirties when first child is born? Smith might have been her first maiden name and put down on child birth cert? Is this where you are getting her Smith name from? Suzanne

1861 occupation is Coal Boatman. (bear in mind that probably everyone in the area had something to do with the coal industry! Suzanne

yep, thats the 71 image i have. am i right in thinking that the census information only lists people that are in the house at the time of oing it, so if his wife was visiting someone she woul be listed elsewhere? lou

on john aspins marriage certificate (james son) it sai father james aspin captain. i dont believe that he wasa seaman as such although john was on one of the HMS ships on the 1901 census. I think he must have been a captain of a coal boat-he was thinking above his stations! LOL i wonder if he was aspden at marriage then? something to consider. lou
