Find Ancestors

Jools, Interesting point about theatrical name/age etc. Augustus Leopold Lynch, who was a witness in the marriage of Joseph Tennyson, decided that he was born in Australia according to the 1901 census and had become a lot younger! No doubt something to do with the fact that he had married a younger woman second time around - Daisy Maud Lane, born c1898, rather than the 'older' Emily Sarah White, born 7 Sep 1867! STEVE - you (or people on this board) are going to have to go through those births I posted a couple of messages up and see if any of them tie in with the little bit of info you have. Bear in mind that as he was a 'theatrical' he probably took a bit of theatrical licence with his name, age and place of birth. Jools

An excellent idea - EXCEPT - there weren't any Joseph Tennyson's or Tennison's born in Lancashire in 1860-1863 (remember my post earlier??) Excluding the ones born in East Yorkshire - below is all there are 1860-1864. I can only suggest you try & find them in the 1861 or 1871 to rule them out. Good thought Deborah! Locating any other Tennysons around that date would be the best way forward. There has always been a thought that there was an Irish connection. Wonder whether perhaps they returned to Ireland? Steve

I feel your frustration..........there just isn't anything jumping out of the census at present...........I've resorted to just trawling through all the Joseph's born in and around the yrs in Manchester LOL........... Perhaps a clue would lie in tracing other Tennyson's you find born in Manchester around the yrs of 1860 - 1865 and trace them and see if they have joseph sat there ??

I suppose his father could have died early, but wonder whether they had any other offspring at all. The other option is the awful spelling in the census returns! Seems a mystery that they disappeared! I know that Joseph Tennyson born c1861 died 5 September 1926 in London as I have managed to obtain a copy of the death certificate. He should appear in other census returns. Steve

I wonder if his father died very early on in his childhood and his mother re married and thus this is why we can't find him in 1881 & 1871??

I've just done similar to Caroline, but checked TENNYSON and TENNISON 1860 to 1863. Zilch Most of the births to those surnames are in East Yorkshire, though there was a Henry in Bethnal Green in one of the 1861 quarters.

I know his father was also a Joseph Tennyson as well. Wonder whether there is an Irish connection at all? Steve

Can't see a birth registration for him( or any other Joseph Tennyson and its variations) between 1859-1865 on full version of birth records.

Do you think they are purposely trying to remain hidden!! Spent ages trying to locate any thing apart from 1901 census return.....and you both found an entry in no time at all! What stars you both are....now, if you could only find a bit more.....yes a bit cheeky of me, I know!

He truly is hidden ............. as are most of anyone with the name Tennyson. Variants: Tenison Tennison Tenyson Teneson oh not forgetting Lemyson LOL

I've tried just Joseph, then just Tenn* - the little so and so is still not showing up on ancestry!
