UPDATE. This thread is being nudged as I am more confused now. Does anyone have any more thoughts?

I am looking for Charles SEVERN. He was born in Radford, Nottinghamshire in 1833 (according to the 1891) He is dead by the 1901 as his wife is a widow. I have looked and looked. I have tried wild cards etc. Can anyone find him on an earlier census? More than one if possible. He should be single on the 1871 as I have found the marriage in the indexes in the Dec qtr of 1871. He married Emma WIGFIELD. I cant find her on earlier census either but thats another story Its not my family, I am looking for a friend. Margaret

I saw that one. I dont think that is him. I think the Charles from Greasley appears later as well. I will have another look. Margaret

Really strange but this matches on christian names on 1881 but not on surname. 1891 shows a son William b1877 Radford. Have checked the image and it does say Cope. 1881 Charles Cope abt 1833 Radford Head - labourer Emma Cope abt 1837 Kneeton On The Hill Wife William Cope abt 1877 Radford Son Arthur Cope abt 1873 Radford Son Maureen

That Cope family in 1881 is really strange. Everything checks out except the surname. Curiouser and curiouser!!!!!!!! Margaret

Funny but can't find Arthur Cope in 1891. It is worth trying to investigate further I think! * update OR William OR Emma?? very odd

What a coincidence though that the whole family have the same first names and were all born in the same places. I did find Charles Cope in 1871. His wife is transcribed as Tamar although it is difficult to make Emma from the image. Margaret

There is this Birth in exactly same page as the William Cope!! Again, 2 entries one says BASFORD and the other RADFORD. Same page and other details though. Its starting to look like an alias. Charles Cope in 1861 has Jemima for a wife but she is still born in Kneeton. Why did I offer to help a friend??? Cant leave it now though. Margaret

Do you think Emma might have been married to a COPE before her marriage to your Charles? For some reason he took her married name to maintain propriety in some way???
