Hi Ann I've read somewhere that about a third of all BMDs between 1837 and 1875 were not registered. I have several marriages that I cannot find a record of. Also, my Mother's friend never knew exactly when she was born (C1902!!) as her parents could not afford the registration fee and it was only when they heard that inspectors were checking up in their area and fining miscreants that they went and registered her as a new-born and she was actually a toddler!! She only found this out when she had to get her birth cert for a passport when she was in her 70s and the birth year did not agree with the age she was certain she actually was.

Anybody else want to have a go at this one Am now trying to establish a link between the only Blaylock born Middleton same as Elizabeth who in 1851 census was a servant in Durham St Giles born approx 1825 died 1854 who could possibly be Williams mother as her parents were William Blaylock and Mary Bell therefore if Mary Bell and Elizabeth Bell were sisters this could be the missing link ?? Am I just trying to make a connection where there isnt one ?? Any ideas - back later Ann

Ann, FreeBMD isn't complete for the time around his birth. Could be his name was mistranscribed in some way and it might be easier to find him when FreeBMD has a bit more coverage. Rose

Sorry not got back earlier Here goes John Edward Blaylock - my grandfather - 1901 has father William Blaylock dob works out to 1854 Working back thru censii to 1861 William always born Laverick Hall (Hedworth Monkton Jarrow) Have been unable to find birth of William since beginning to look over 1 year ago have searched ancestry, family relatives,1837 online Williams 1st wife Janet Crookston - hence middle name of child Tinner another middle name looks like should be Tina as Janets mother was Agnes Tina No father listed for William on marriage cert Janet dies William marries Susan Crummey 14 years younger than him - father of William on cert states William (Hotel Keeper) have been advised on here that my William probably made that up as was embarrassed at maybe being illegimate 1861 William living with Elizabeth and George Cummins Laverick Hall as visitor & John Bell lodger 1871 William living with Elizabeth and John B Cummins as nephew George died 1868 Marriage cert for Elizabeth and George states Elizabeth father John Bell Deduced that John B Cummins is really John Bell poss brother as census states lodger 1851 Elizabeth married to Robert Robinson cannot find that marriage but record of elizabeth robson (robinson) states elizabeth father John Bell Also records found always come back to Laverick Hall Go round and round with this one but have to keep coming back What else can I tell you Ann

I don't think a birth would be registered 6 years after the event. It might have been registered initially and then re-registered 6 years later, but I think you would be able to tell this from the index as there should be some extra details or numbers in the index. Kath. x
