Find Ancestors

I'm trying to find out the surnames of the two wives of Isaac Barrell, my Gt Gt Grandfather. It seems he was married to Ellen Jane and to Mary. He had 4 children between 1853 and 1862 with Mary and a further 10 between 1867 and 1884 with Ellen Jane. I've found an Isaac Barrell on FreeBMD fror Dec 1865 Colchester (4a 1178) but there is no other person on the page. I can find nothing for the first marriage. I assume this marriage was also in Colchester. Any ideas. I live in Hereford so I can't come and look through records in Colchester. Isaac came from Langham and all the kids are down as being born in either Myland or Colchester (but that is only the district where the birth was registered on FreeBMD). He's living in Ipswich Road Lion & Lamb Lane, Mile End on the 1881 census

easiest way, is to purchase a couple of the childrens birth certs

I think the marriage that was found for your earlier is correct. Here is Mary BLOOMFIELD in 1851, the dates match, and I can't find her in 1861. Also, there is connections with other family names here, so pretty sure this must be her. She has brothers Mark & William, and sister Harriet. All names for Isaac & Mary's children. It's possible that Mary died in childbirth to Isaac in1866, and then Isaac went on to marry Ellen. Their first child appears to be born around 1870 in Mile End, so I would anticipate that the marriage took place in that area, between 1866 and 1870. I haven't been able to search for a death for Mary as yet, which would help narrow down the years to search. I have to go now, but I'll check back later. Good luck.

I think you've got the wrong Mile End for 1851 & 1861 searches for Ellen.. Mile End, Middlesex is near enough Jack the Ripper-ville. Mile End, Essex is in Colchester (now) just up the road from the station Mylands Hospital is nearby so probably Mile End and Mylands are one and the same.

I've found Ellen Jane Barrett b Oct/Nov/Dec 1846, registered in Colchester. (Plenty of Ellens in Lexden/Colchester +or- 2 yrs of 1845 but only 1 Ellen Jane) How does she look on the 1851 & 1861 censuses with regards to place of birth?

No. Its not her. My Ellen comes from Mile End/Myland not Colchester St James. Must be one of the others.

Sorry am confused now Ellen Jane listed as born in Colchester and living in Colchester St Nicholas in 1851 census. Don't know where you got the Colchester St James from with the information I posted???? No other Ellen Janes listed on Ancestry for 1851/61 born at around the same time and place. Will give up now and will try to help someone else

Ellen Jane Barratt born c1846/7 in Colchester Essex on the 1871 census is a visitor in Islington St Mary London. So doesn't look like she is Isaac's wife!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for any offence caused. Especially to Jess and Diane. I was typing away at work on a tea break, I answered the phone and needed to refer to the appointments system, so I quickly clicked on send. This also accounts for the St Nicholas/St James error, never reviewed the details. Someone somewhere else in my treee is register at St James. Said phone call turned into a full blown problem to deal with so I failed to review posting. I am of course thankful for any help offered. I know it must be very time consuming. I do not currently have an Ancestry connection. My family tree is something I've only just returned to after a prolonged break, it was getting too obsessive.
