I have two people who I have found on the 1901 census and have a marriage cert for one but I want their birth records and I cannot find them on either FreeBMD or Ancestry. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Caroline

Are you checking the full images on ancestry or the partial index? Both the partial index and freebmd are incomplete. There is also the chance that the birth wasn't registered. Who are you looking for? Glen

Siblings James Stellyes c1882 Bermondsey Maria Dorothy Stellyes c1884 Bermondsey Their parents are Herman Stellyes c1856 St Georges in the East. and Mary Ann ????? It is the Mothers Maiden name I am trying to find.

Caroline Report 9 Aug 2006 22:46

I know the surname has a various amount of spellings Stellyes...Stelljes.....Stellges....Stellies and all of the above but with only 1 L but I have tried all of them with no joy for the two children uner births. I have James' marriage cert so I know the Father is correct but I only have the Mothers name from the 1901 census.

I think I have found the death record of the mother Mary Ann but I am not certain. If I order this will it give me her Maiden name? I know the birth cert of her children should but this is where I am completely stumped!

You won't get her maiden name from the death cert. I can't see any births for 1881-1885. Births were sometimes not registered, but it might be better to look for the marriage.Births needed someone to go to the registrar, marriages were conducted in the presence of a registrar, and in theory can't be unregistered. Thanks for looking! I had ordered a marriage cert for Herman but when it came through today it was for Herman Stellyes and Adelheid Stellyes. ( I suppose this could have been his cousin??) But there was no mention of a Mary Ann on the cert.

Yes Glen, I think that is them. In the 1901 census the Mother is down as Mary Ann.

Caroline Report 9 Aug 2006 23:25

Hi Georgina That is the cert that I ordered that came today.... I assume that Herman and Adelheid were cousins as they married...the only possiblilty is that Adelheid called herself Maria or Mary Ann on the census returns??? Do you think it is possible?

Caroline Report 9 Aug 2006 23:29

Yep, I thought that I had struck lucky when I found that too but the Herman married Adelheid not Maria Salt or at least that is what the cert says....any chance that could be wrong?

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 9 Aug 2006 23:30

Checked Ancestry and the spelling is Stelljes Glen

Caroline

Caroline Report 9 Aug 2006 23:31

The marriage cert says Herman Steljes married Adelheid Steljes on 12 Oct 1882 you can see the fun I am having with the different ways that the names are spelt!

Hi Caroline I have had ancestors who have changed their names on censuses. So rightly or wrongly I think that it is possible that Adelheid changed her name for census purposes to something less germanic and easier for the enumerator spell. Hope this helps.I have also checked for births of the children on 1837online in all quarters and all name variations from 1880 to 1886 and not found them. Sorry couldn't be of assistance with birth records Diane
