Have you searched for yet another marriage for Mary Ann? I hunted for ages for a previous marriage of my great grandfather's 2nd wife. She married him as widow FIELD and her father was Walter BUTLER. I just couldn't find the Field / Butler marriage..... but by tracking her through each census, when luckily she was miles away from birthplace and therefore stood out, I found her married to a HUMPHREYS in between the other 2 marriages and a search in the index confirmed this. You mention 'step children' - are they Mary Ann's children from her previous marriage? If so, what are their names etc.? Perhaps you can get the birth certificate for one of them, and that should give you the full name of Mary Ann's previous husband Mr. Carpenter, if he was the father, plus it will give you any other surnames that Mary Ann had. Then it might be easier to find the marriage etc. Sorry, got to go for now but I will check back later... Kate.

Mary Ann Carpenter (WIDOW) age 37 -Father Charles Crump -Farm Labourer. I have found them on 1891 and 1901 (!891 as wife but not quite!) Exeter,devon with children/step children Bertie Charlie,Wilfred winifred. some born Crediton/sandford some exeter-They follow on from previous marriage so i know they are correct family. She is down as being born Alphington Exeter,devon. She is called Mary Ann Carpenter at marriage-so presumedly was married to some one called carpneter! Cannotfind a Crump/Carpenter marriage-or a Mary Ann carpenter in 1881-Only in the workhouse> but I think she is unmarried and belongs to someone else! Can anyone else spot a marriage/death or anything which might help-I cannot even find a birth of Mary Ann crump! Hoping someone might be able to help me.Please?
