Hi there, sorry to but in but was interested in reading your query. The reason I replied is because I live right opposite the Canterbury Barracks. Now I am not sure about how long the barracks have been in the same place and there are two depots but if they have it is interesting to note that the parish of Northgate is adjacent to both the barracks. Don't know if that is of any use to you. Regards

Hi Maureen, thanks for the info, I will save this to ponder over as well as the others. Did it say what Martin's job was? Thanks for your time. Much appreciated. Polly

Hi Reg, yes Martin was a brush maker as stated on the marriage certificate, but was wondering if he had been in the army himself before he became a brush maker. Polly

Ah, well that's interesting, Reggie, because I found this marriage: Martin Lodge 1841 Ipswich Suffolk to either a Hannah, Ellen or Sarah. So... could it have been Martin and Ellen?

Not sure of the relevance of Hounslow being an Army base.............I thought Martin was a brush maker........... Reg

Hi Reg, no I had not seen that, will have to think about that one too, although I was thinking Yorkshire. Do you know if Honslow was an Army base? Polly

Margaret, thanks for that, I do have the Cragg info, its the Lodges I cannot find, with William being a soldier I suppose he could be anywere, but he would have been a small boy on the 1851. Any ways much appreciated for your time. Polly

On the IGI there is a baptism for a MARTIN LODGE 26 APR 1821 Saint Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England Father: John Mother: Sarah He's the only Martin Lodge born in the 1820s - but various others are listed for other, much later or much earlier years.

Hi Thanks June, I have seen the death at leeds, but I do not know were the Lodges came from, also cannot find census with William and Mary on, Mary lived different places without him in Preston. Was told they were parted. Trying to find the Lodges side, thinking if I find Martin Lodge I could go on from there. Polly

On the 1871 census the 2 sons of William & Mary are living with relatives. Martin is with his Cragg grandparents in Preston and John William is a nephew in the household of Hugh & Margaret Ross also in Preston.

Hi Have checked on the 1871 unless it has been mis-transcribed no luck. It would help to have his birthplace. Sorry I have got to go out for the rest of the afternoon. Will check the thread when I get back.....to see what happens :-) Regards Vera

Mary's on the 1881 census, living with her 2 sons, Martin & John Wm. and her mother, Sarah Cragg in Preston, Lancashire. Says she's married but husband is not with her. Margaret
