I can see one Thomas Collins born in Durham, 1886. That was Easington, Durham. Would this be right? Apr quarter. 10a 440. I can do census checks if you require.

Hi Rebekah, All I know was in the 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 the family were living in the Belfieldside Blackhill area of Durham. I don't know which area of Durham Easington is, do you know this area? Betty

Are you sure its Belfieldside and not Benfieldside? - cannot find the former but the latter is there and I think about 20 miles from Easington. Only think mind

Yes soooo sorry it is Benfieldside, Blackhill, in the 1891 census Thomas Collins is aged 6 with his family. Would they have to go 20 miles to register a birth.? Think I need new glasses!!! Betty

♥Betty Boo from Dundee♥ Report 26 Mar 2007 20:48

So do you think that will be the birth reference then Rebekah? Betty

Betty, found this bit Benfieldside is a parish in County Durham, in England. Although not a village in its own right it is signposted and locally known. Benfieldside refers to Benfieldside Road and the adjoining streets which are situated to the South of Shotley Bridge (Village). The Parish Church is St. Cuthbert which is situated on Church Bank. It is situated directly to the north-west of Consett, to which it is effectively attached. Also nearby are the River Derwent, Shotley Bridge, Bridgehill, and Blackhill. I live not far from Shotley bridge and it is no where near Easington so I don't think it can be the same one

The census gives the registration district for Benfieldside. Its Lanchester. Margaret

Hi Jane, Thanks for all the information on Benfieldside, really interesting, gives you a good idea of the area as I have never been to Durham. So I am still looking for the birth of Thomas Collins then. Betty

Hi Margaret, I have amended the info in my post to show Lanchester, thanks for the information, I know nothing about this area at all. Betty

I looked up the distance and get it as under 10 miles in a straight line. Whilst looking I found a Thomas Collins 1815 & wife Mary 1816 at Iveston, which is halfway between Benfieldside and Lanchester. Both born in Ireland by the way if thats the right family but there were a few Collins in the area.

Hi Old Mick Braddock, No Thomas Collins (sen) the father was born in Ireland but in 1841, the Mother Mary Ann Collins (nee Duffy) was born in Scotland. Betty

Hi Betty Better luck with the Irish than I have with mine. I am 95% sure of gggrandfather and thats as close as I have been able to get as I cannot find marriage for ggrandfather though I have ggrandmothers maiden name. Passes the time looking though Mick

♥Betty Boo from Dundee♥ Report 26 Mar 2007 22:15

Oh Mick, Tell me about it (the Irish I mean) my maternal grandmother comes from Ireland so I haven't got any further back there although I do have her parents names from her marriage in Scotland. I have a feeling my grandfathers family come further back from Ireland and now hubby's side are from Ireland. Top of the morning to you too. Betty
