I have a Mary Ann Duffy who married in Durham on 26th November 1866, she was aged 21 at the time of her marriage. Her fathers name was Patrick Duffy and I know she was born in Scotland and it would be about 1845 +/- a year. Birth not on either Scotlands People or Family Search. Betty.

Hi Glitter Baby, Thank for trying to find her!! I have tried a few on the census too and Mary Ann Duffy with a father called Patrick is quite common as the parents came from Ireland. I have a feeling I had this birth before and it was Berwick on Tweed but I just can't find it. Betty

I think that Berwick upon Tweed comes under the registration district of Berwick, Northumberland. Maureen

Hi carrie, When did it change then, this birth is in 1845, will it be on Ancestry or Scotlands people? I asked on General board too and they aren't too sure either. Betty

Found this on Northumberland website about Berwick This historic border market town changed hands between England and Scotland no less than 14 times between its first capture by the Scots (around 1018) and its eventual retaking by the English in 1482 Maureen

Thanks Maureen, Thanks for the info, wonder who has it now then?? Looks like Scotlands people still think Berwick is Scotland as they have it on their website for BMD's. Betty

Hi Betty I don't know when it changed, Its still counted by a lot of people including myself as Scotland, I post a parcel once of my friend from there and she wrote Scotland on it, so I think they count themselves as Scottish, No matter what the Postal service think.:)

I would think so too, it is still scottish as far as I and Scotlands People think. Betty

Denis Report 3 Apr 2007 18:42

This is really very simple. Berwickshire is a Scottish county. Berwick on Tweed is not in Berwickshire. It is in Northumberland. Northumberland is in England. Denis

Am I correct in thinking she was a Catholic? Are you looking in the Old Parish Records on Scotlandspeople? These are the records of the Established Church so not much chance of finding her there. I don't know about IGI and Catholics? The Catholic parish records are held at the Catholic archives in Edinburgh, copies at NAS, both unindexed. Denis
