It would be best for you to buy your grans birth certificate which will give you her parents names and her place of birth. You can buy it at GRO online for £7. From there you could work backwards through the 1901 census and other certificates.

Presume you have got her fathers name from the marriage cert? As you know her birth date you should be able to find her birth certificate which will give her mums name and from there you can search for their marriage cert. you need to work backwards step by step. You can search free for BMD,s on ancestry Shirley

As it was such an easy job: 2nd Quarter (April/May/June) 1927 Gavin, Elizabeth E Mother: Griffin Liverpool 8b 163 Now you can go to GRO online and using that info order the certificate for the full information. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ But have a go finding it yourself again by going to ancestry full bmd index.

Thanks for that. Thought it was the right one, the only thing is her mother's maiden name isn't Griffin, it's Buxton.

Are you sure that her 'mum' wasnt a step mum? Thats the only entry for the right time and place/name. Where did you get the birth date from?

Joanna

Joanna Report 7 Jun 2007 18:55

Her mum died when she was 16 but i'm pretty sure her dad didn't marry again. He was in the forces and travelled quite a lot. She bought her sister up.

Well, you better tread carefully then, as if this is the right cert and there isnt another there to match ......................... If she is still alive ask if she has her birth cert and her parents marriage cert - that will help you.

Joanna

Joanna Report 7 Jun 2007 19:02

That's what i was thinking when i pulled it up. Thought i'd done it wrong.

Mmmm - you saw it too then. Well done for finding it. I think you need to ask her if she has her birth certificate. Did she have siblings? If she did you could check for their registrations to see what name the mother is given as. Does she know her fathers birth date? and where he lived etc. before 1901? If he was born before then. You could always start looking for his line through the marriage cert and the census.

Joanna Report 7 Jun 2007 19:05

She hasn't. Don't know what to do now. She's the only one left (keeps saying she's not around for much longer lol she'll be here in another 20 yrs!!) and just wants to find her roots.

How do you get thoses things up that tell you everybody that's living in the house? She has a sister called Ruth, 4 yrs younger, and her father was John Gavin. He was born 1899 in Liverpool.
