Trying to find descendants of Boomer family who came over from Donaghadee/Newtonards/Belfast areas of Northern Ireland to settle in Barrow-in-Furness,Lancashire c1870s.These included James,William,Henry,Alexander,Agnes,Jane(nee Mawhinney) There are a lot of links with this area & the farrier/blacksmith trades. There were POSSIBLY other members of Boomer & Mawhinney families that came over at same time or even later. These families spread & went to Stoke-on-Trent,Canada,America,New Zealand & Australia amongst others.I would love to hear from anyone with links / connections. At present I am back to approx. 1800 in Northern Ireland but believe family originated in FRANCE and were driven out due to religion.

Paul,
I have a James and Philip Boomer living in Portaferry around 1850 but no idea where they came from before that. Not related to the Donaghadee crowd as far as I can tell (no matches in trees).

Philip's marriage certificate lists his father as 'Rainey' Boomer, blacksmith but no other info. May have come from the Lisburn area. As to the French origins, I believe they were originally French Hugenots and that Rainey is a bastardisation of Rene who was, supposedly, one of the first settlers.I thnk the name was Bulmer originally but wouldn't swear to it!
