The Battalion formed part of 125th Brigade, 42nd (EAST LANCASHIRE) DIVISION

The Division was involved in the following operations


1916

The division embarked for Egypt between 12-16 January

4 and 5 Aug...Battle of Romani [No. 3 Section, Canal Defences].


1917

24 Sept.-18 Nov.... ... Operations on the Flanders Coast (XV. Corps, Fourth Army


1918

24 and 25 March... Battle of Bapaume [VI. Corps, Third Army].
28 March .... First Battle of Arras (IV. Corps, Third Army].
5 April ... Battle of Ancre {IV. Corps, Third Army].
21-23 Aug... Battle of Albert (IV. Corps, Third Army).
31 Aug.—3 Sept. ... ...Second Battle of Bapaume [IV. Corps, Third Army}.
27-29 Sept. . Battle of the Canal du Nord {IV. Corps, Third Army].
9-12 Oct ... The Pursuit to the Selle [IV. Corps, Third Army].
17-23 Oct.... Battle of the Selle ‘IV. Corps, Third Army}.

On the 10th November the division captured Hautmont and Fort Hautmont. This was the end of its fighting in the Great War.

From the Battalion War Diary
29th March 1 wounded
31st March 1 wounded
4/5th April,the 7th were in the front line trenches near Buquoy. They were shelled both days. The 4th is described as "Hostile Artillery activity" and the 5th ( from 0430hrs) as "heavy barrage". One of the above dates could account for John's injury date.

*GSW was used as a generic term for any penetrating wound caused by enemy action

It was about 70 miles from Buquoy to 18th General Hospital

I wonder if this has anything to do with the confusion of surnames. Depending on how the question was asked when birth registered - what's the Mother's maiden name could be interpreted as what's the maiden name of the child's mother's mother
