The Battalion formed part of 125th Brigade, 42nd (EAST LANCASHIRE) DIVISION
The Division was involved in the following operations

24 and 25 March... Battle of Bapaume [VI. Corps, Third Army]. 28 March .... First Battle of Arras (IV. Corps, Third Army]. 5 April ... Battle of Ancre {IV. Corps, Third Army]. 21-23 Aug... Battle of Albert (IV. Corps, Third Army). 31 Aug.—3 Sept. ... ...Second Battle of Bapaume [IV. Corps, Third Army}. 27-29 Sept. . Battle of the Canal du Nord {IV. Corps, Third Army]. 9-12 Oct ... The Pursuit to the Selle [IV. Corps, Third Army]. 17-23 Oct.... Battle of the Selle ‘IV. Corps, Third Army}.
On the 10th November the division captured Hautmont and Fort Hautmont. This was the end of its fighting in the Great War.

Full Name Aspray, John Wm Service Number 281235 Enlisted 20th May 1915 Discharge Date 14 Apr 1919 GSW Rt Arm Address 7 Birchall St, Rochdale Pension appears to have been paid up to December 1931 Served with : Lancashire Fusiliers 1/7th Battalion
WWI, Hospital Registers, 1914-1919
6th April 1918 18th General Hospital (Camiers) 6 days in Hospital with severe *GSW wound to L Buttock
From the Battalion War Diary 29th March 1 wounded 31st March 1 wounded 4/5th April,the 7th were in the front line trenches near Buquoy. They were shelled both days. The 4th is described as "Hostile Artillery activity" and the 5th ( from 0430hrs) as "heavy barrage". One of the above dates could account for John's injury date.
*GSW was used as a generic term for any penetrating wound caused by enemy action
It was about 70 miles from Buquoy to 18th General Hospital

I wonder if this has anything to do with the confusion of surnames. Depending on how the question was asked when birth registered - what's the Mother's maiden name could be interpreted as what's the maiden name of the child's mother's mother
