You were quite right to query the 19-year gap, as it simply didn’t exist!! It was falsely created by the inaccurate ‘info’ in the book

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 23 Aug 2025 23:23

Thanks. It's definitely a challenge. I do like to verify info myself, that's why it takes me so long :-)
The red flag went up as soon as I saw that 19 year difference.
I'll keep on plodding. Thank you.

We enjoy the hunt…..and the challenge. Keeps our brains ticking over ;-) ;-)

The book may have been compiled before a lot of the info became available so it might be wise not to rely too much on its ‘info’

Do your own research, or if you’re stuck, get help on here where people have many, many years of experience of researching FH and have no preconceptions about the people being researched

I've added to my last post, showing Janet/Jessie's death and proving she wasn't born 1833.

Keep at it, Yvonne - practice makes perfect, so they say!

Yvonne Report 23 Aug 2025 21:51

No idea how old the book is. It belongs to my son-in-law's family.
Andrew is part of that family.
What I am trying to do is a 'family tree' for my grandchildren, of which one half is the Dicksons.
You all never fail to amaze me at how you find stuff. I really try to dig but somehow never get to where you do. All I can do is say thank you, it really is appreciated.

Catherine Thomson Wallace is in 5 trees on Ancestry.

Only one of them names her mother, with wrong DOB (1841), but correct parents' names.

The tree "belongs" to an Andrew Dickson, who lives in Ottawa, Canada.

He also lists Janet Jessie Wallace 1833, and gives her death as in 1906 in Edinburgh.

He clearly hasn't done the arithmetic, as this is her death on SP, implying that she was born c1826 - presumably the one actually born 1824 as already shown:

It would appear that the book is not an old one with contemporaneous facts, but one compiled much more recently, and therefore less likely to be fully accurate

To summarise what has been found for you……….
Catherine Hay was the mother of Catherine Wallace, born c1821, who was, in turn, the mother of Catherine Thomson WALLACE, born illegitimately in 1861.

What are you trying to prove, please?

Good news about finding info re your other thread. :-) :-)

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 23 Aug 2025 19:58

Thanks for all this. I'm just trying to digest it all but it looks like there definitely was another Catherine between Catherine Hay and Catherine Thomson, and that certainly makes more sense. Since starting this post I did find the one born 1820 but couldn't make a proper connection. I did search all the sites I mentioned but you all seem to be far more successful than me. Probably down to me being a bit technologically impaired!!!
The book is one that someone in the Dickson family has done but when it got to David Wallace and Catherine Hay there were no dates mentioned so I was working a bit blind.
Thanks so much.
Note to Erika: I did reply to your post but it got returned to me, I tried again and it wasn't returned but never appeared in my sent folder. Sorry about that.
The post was very helpful and I did find lots of information. Thank you.

Did you miss the earlier baptisms on SP, Yvonne?
Regarding another of your threads, you didn't respond to my PM.........................

Are David and Catherine actually named as the parents of the girls listed in the 'family book'?
Is a location given for their baptisms?

Are these your relations??

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Aug 2025 10:35

Re the grand-daughter Davidina (supposedly born c1844) in the 1851 census -

in 1861 she's listed as a daughter of David, and called Jessie D.
In 1871 she's Davinna, and back to being a grand-daughter.

There's no sign of her baptism on SP.
