Hello
Am hoping someone may be able to help me find Evan and family before 1851 please? I have his marriage certificate dated 23rd Dec 1848 in Cardiff to Mary Ann Dobell. On here is shown his father as John Evans a Farmer. Evan Evans occupation says School Master residing at Working? Street, Cardiff. Full age given for both Evan and Mary.
I am hoping to find a baptism for Evan and hopefully with parents on the 1841 census. Here is the 1851 census...hope you can help

When looking for baptisms you need to be aware that a lot of ‘Chapel’ records were not kept.

In 1851 as per your post he is shown as a farm labourer,,,,,,,,,something of a change from his marriage cert

Looking at Genuki for Pencoed it would appear that Chapel baptism records are not available after 1809 and the Anglican church’s have not deposited their records at all.

Given the difference in occupations and a common name - are you sure that both are the same man?

Hi Jink
The census for 1851 that you have posted and the 1848 marriage that I posted are both incorrect. The 1851 and 1861 censuses that I posted are both correct

Also a Richard Evans born 1861 Bridgend

ErikaH Report 16 Mar 2024 15:48

How did you work back to these people?

You need to establish Mary’s maiden name beyond doubt.

Graham

Graham Report 16 Mar 2024 15:55

I have just looked on the GRO and Richard who was born 1861, Evan 1856 and Eliza Ann born 1859 all Bridgend had Mothers Maiden name WRIGHT

On the 1861 census Mother was Mary Ann Evans

I have just found a marriage in 1849 Bridgend between Evan Evans and Mary Ann(e) Wright. so I mistakenly chose the Dobell marriage and will have to reorder

I don't suppose there is any chance of finding Evan Evans on the 1841 census?
Born around 1821
1851 in Coity Lower
Supposedly born in Pencoed
Father William
Struggling with this now
Unable to see a baptism in Pencoed

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 16 Mar 2024 18:42

You have as much chance as any of us of finding him in 1841……

Aged around 20, probably not with family - and birthplaces are not recorded in 1841

As Evan's address when he married was Ewenny, this may PERHAPS be a possibility:
