Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 15:16

Regards Florence and Edward I will ask her ErikaH, I presumed she got it from her Mum, but I will check.

Failing all else I will just order certificates.

Sorry had to go out, yes I saw those census's ErikaH and haven't dismissed them yet because its the property next door or very near to the property on the 1939 register I found originally

Because once you couldn’t - I didn’t know it had changed.

Not sure why someone said earlier that one cannot add a second forename initial when searching on freebmd

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2023 13:44

Can’t you ask your contact where she got Edward and Florence’s names?

Info available online doesn’t suggest that Gerald’s father was named Edward.

Does she have any proven research? Or his birth cert?

I know namelessone, I will give it some time, but not all my time, they information you have all kindly given me today will be helpful whether I solve it or not.

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 12:05

You are both right about the DNA, I dont usually go that route, but I was asked to look and so I thought I would do it for her.

With those cams I think you may have to track back to around 4c great grandparents at least. Then you would have to look at ALLtheir descendants in the hope of finding a matching person. With no guarantee that you will.

Deborah Report 5 Feb 2023 12:02

Thank you ErikaH, she has just given me her Great Grandmothers name, maternal line, Agnes Harris as you posted above.

ErikaH

Those are very low matches. I think you can be assured they are related because of the other matches but at that level the actual match can be hard or impossible to find.

Experts will often regard that level of match very unreliable.

Personally, I don't think a DNA result is the best way to start looking for relatives. It is useful further down the line but much better to start with yourself, then your parents and their siblings and carry on backwards looking at births and marriages until you get to the 1939 register and then census records.

You could get tied up in all sorts of knots otherwise.

People's memories can't always be relied on.

21 cM to me

31 cM to my Mum

she also has a match to a cousin who I share 222cM with I know who this cousin is, she is related to me through my Richards/Jones line, we are second cousins

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Feb 2023 11:47

Have you tried working back from her?

Has she researched her own line thoroughly, and obtained documentary proof?

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 5 Feb 2023 11:46

Again, how distant is the match? That will give you the clue as to how far back you have to look.
Then you can compare your tree to that matches tree.

You also need to follow the other persons tree back yourself, in case there are mistakes.
