I am a bit stuck!! I have William James Cooper born 19th May 1872 (from Warwickshire Baptism records) Father William Cooper Mother Mary Ann??.

He married Edith Ann Ingram born abt.1874 on 22 May 1893 at Coventry, Holy Trinity, Warwickshire.

I cant find them on the 1901 or 1911 census.

They had 5 children, Francis Laverne (birth registered and also always known as Frank born 28 Aug 1907. John born 1908 New Bilton, Rugby. Herbert Thomas born 14 Mar 1910, Rugby. Also a James and a daughter May, whose births I cant find yet.

I found Herbert in 1911 living with a married couple, address just says Frankton, Rugby, he was age 1, and the census states birth place unknown, and that he came from Rugby Union, which from a Google search seems to be some sort of workhouse/children's home.

I know from a relative that both Herbert and John were sent to Dr. Bernardo's as young children.

John and his brother Frank went out to Canada to do farming. Both in 1920. I found the records. I also discovered they both were married in Canada and stayed there.

My problem is trying to place the family on any census records (apart from Herbert who I mentioned above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Presumably, you have checked that the parents hadn't died by 1911?

nameslessone Report 7 Aug 2022 12:08

Herbert’s birth certificate may give you some clues. Herbert’s mother was either in the workhouse or was using the infirmary just for the birth.

Bear in mind that not everyone actually appears on the census. Some people avoid it, they were travelling overnight, homeless and not found etc.

If you haven’t found the family on the census how do you know about the two children where you can’t find a birth record?

Herbert is my Cousin's Wife's Father. I was told about Frank, James and May, Herbert was her Father and I just happened to come across John.

Haven't found a death for either of them yet.

Deborah

Deborah Report 7 Aug 2022 12:15

Yes, ErikaH he was.

Deborah Report 7 Aug 2022 12:19

I ordered Herberts birth certificate, it states he was born at 20 Lower Hillmorton Road, Rugby, same address for Mother's residence, she was a launderess.

Interestingly she has not named a Father on the birth certificate and yet the Father is named as William James Cooper on the baptism record.

Thanks ErikaH, I did wonder if she may have been known as something else.

A tree on Ancestry claims that Edith died in 1915 in Leicestershire..........NO record of it on freebmd

Her birth was registered OND 1873

There is a tree on Ancestry that suggests that May is Evelyn May , born in 1901 as Erika has given.

If the father is not named on the birth certificate then the parents were not married but he can be named in the baptism records.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 7 Aug 2022 12:35

The parents' names in 1911 above match William James's baptism record - as does the place:

William James Cooper
in the Warwickshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1910
Name: William James Cooper
Baptism Date: 19 May 1872
Baptism Place: Newbold on Avon, Warwickshire, England

Father: William Cooper
Mother: Mary Ann Cooper

Annoyingly, Ancestry doesn't transcribe whole families together for the 1901 census for some strange reason.

However, with James (general labourer) are listed:
Annie, wife, 27, Newbold.
James, son, 4, Newbold
George, son, 1, Newbold

Deborah

Deborah Report 7 Aug 2022 12:39

I have just updated my own tree on Ancestry to read Evelyn May.

Have amended Frank to 1906, I got the date originally from his Canadian marriage record, which stated he was 25 in 1932.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 7 Aug 2022 12:43

In 1901, at Evelyn May's baptism, William James's occupation is "engineer's labourer", which fits with the 1911 census.

Deborah

Deborah Report 7 Aug 2022 12:46

So possibly they where known as James and Annie (re the 1901 census)

Deborah

Deborah Report 7 Aug 2022 12:48

I did see the 1911 census you posted ArgyllGran, and wondered about it.
