Caris Report 8 Mar 2021 23:05

hi I'm looking for information on my grandad Douglas McDonald Wyatt born 1931-1995 Cuckfield Sussex. His mum maiden name was BLAKE. Douglas was given up around aged 3 to Dr Barnardo home. He was then living with a family Surname CARPENTER in Hampshire aged 8. We don't have much more information on Douglas and hoping someone here can help please. Thank you

Yes, per death record below.

Do you have a copy of his birth cert?
Does it give his father's name?

Hi thank you. How comes his birth date would of been changed?
Yes he kept his name throughout. He married my nan Kathleen e adkins.
All I see on search is mum maiden name Blake.. but I no idea her first nam but my nan did mention Betty?!
He also worked in Scotts Restaurant London. Is it possible to find his mums 1st name of his dad?

KathleenBell Report 9 Mar 2021 00:38

If you buy his birth certificate it will have his mother's name on it. It depends on whether or not she named his father as to whether you will get that as well.

Only buy the certificate from the GRO in Southport. Some other websites charge a lot more.

If Douglas did live at the address in 1939 as posted by ArgyllGran, ( I'm not sure what the crossing out means ?) the house was in Portchester, probably White Hart Lane.

The local schools would be in Castle Street or if he lived near the west end of White Hart Lane, he might have attended Wicor School.

The secondary school was and still is in White Hart Lane.

School records, if they are available would likely be at Hampshire Record Office in Winchester.
They might detail when he attended school and the leaving date.

There doesn’t seem to be a marriage for Wyatt/Blake and he seems to be an only child

So his birth cert is what you need for it’s info

You can order his Barnardos records too but they do cost and take some time to be sent out

Because of COVID though they aren’t accepting requests at the moment

Once you have the birth certificate giving his mothers full name then you can search for a marriage, if there appears to have been one. Then use the information you have to search for other children.

You can also use the freebmd website now to see if there are any more Wyatt/Blake births

Re the changed DOB in 1939 -

The first date (25th) would either have been told to the clerk in error, or else the clerk wrote that by mistake. Or perhaps Douglas believed it was his correct DOB.

Then later (1944) it was corrected for some reason, and updated on the 1939 Register.

To buy a copy of the birth cert (to find out parents' name/s), register with the GRO website, then order the cert, quoting the reference details I posted earlier.

Where they lived

-----------------------
Now FMP is displaying their records differently you can get to Page 24 to look at it too. However in this case there is nothing to see for all but one of the entries, (not Douglas), which would appear to mean that all of the entries are redacted because of the 100 year rule. Douglas' record presumably has been opened on the main page but not Page 24. Possibly he was also recorded at school?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Mar 2021 12:05

A red line through a name in 1939, with reference to another page, can mean a duplicate entry, or a corrected entry is on the other page.

Looking at the image of Douglas's entry in 1939 on Ancestry -
he's on image 22, with reference to page 24.

On other pages, for example, there's a Violet D Lewis , 15/2/1913, on image 18, not scored out but with ref in red to page 23.
On image 24, she's there with same DOB and same address, so perhaps it was just a duplicate entry.

Another example -
also on image 18 there's an Audrey M E Montague, 7/9/1911, scored out and with ref to page 24.
Her corrected entry then shows on image 25, with DOB 9/9/1911.

So, page 23 entries show on image 24, and page 24 entries show on image 25.

Looking at image 25 for Douglas - disappointingly, his must be one of the many closed records on that page. In fact, they're all closed except for Audrey Montague.

That's on Ancestry - perhaps someone can look on FMP, where 1939 is a bit more up-to-date than Ancestry?

EDIT:
I see GG has tried that with no better success.

Just to say re. 1939 on FMP, ..........

White Hart Lane is NOT in Portsmouth.
It is in Portchester in the Urban District of Fareham, Hampshire.
