Argyll Gran, just got some more info. Henry Bainbridge birth mother was Ada Bainbridge who married Thomas Stansfield in 1916. Don't know why they did not keep Henry, Ada possibly gave him up when he was born!! Henry married Rose Alexander in 1937 registered at Howden. I'm beginning to think its quite possible that Joseph Bainbridge and Ellen Maude could be the ones who bought Henry up, Not everyone used their given names, did they, certainly in my family that happened quite a lot!! :-S

Teresa Report 30 Oct 2020 16:35

Oh gosh, have had to have another look now. As far as I know her Mother has given her these snippets of information. I do not know her Mum and she is quite elderly now, but she is going to see if her mum can remember anything else.

ArgyllGran. You are right as I didn't have much to go on I thought if I could at least find their marriage it would give me a clue, but it wasn't the right way to go about it, I see that now, but with all the info I have received from all of you I think its falling into shape, but I do need a break for a while.

Hi Sorry missed all on page 2. She only put down her Grandad was bought up by Jack and Maud Bainbridge. I will read all this information on this 2nd page and get back on again later. Have been doing this for hours this afternoon and will have to break to get some dinner soon!! Teresa

I suspect that Henry's grand-daughter was just told that he lived with his aunt Maud and uncle Jack, and then Teresa looked for any vaguely possible marriage.

I don't think the Guisborough marriage is necessarily anything to do with Henry.
The name Bainbridge may also be a red herring, if they were Henry's maternal relatives.

Re the 1915 birth -
There's a Bainbridge family in Chapel Haddlesey (in Selby RD) in 1911,with two daughters, one of whom may have been his mother. They both married after 1915.
There's also a brother named John, but he married an Alice, not a Maud.

Sarah married James Hanson in 1920.

There's another sister Harriet, on the 1901 census. She's a servant in Selby in 1911.

ADDED:
Ah! But!
There's a brother Joseph on the 1891 census for that family - could possibly have been known as Jack?:

Could be their nephew??

Teresa - does your friend know her grandmother's name?

Does her mother (what's her first name?) have any siblings?

There are Bainbridge/Alexander children born in the Selby/Howden area :
Alec - 1939
Vera - 1940
Geoffrey - 1943
Gordon - 1945
Margaret R - 1950

Also possibly Gary 1953, Sylvia 1954, and David A 1957.

We need more names and facts don't we AG I have lost track of which name I should be looking for now. Did Teresa just think it was Maud he married and not Elizabeth or what?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Oct 2020 15:31

Yes, sorry, Teresa, I meant your friend's mother.

Did your friend's mother just say Jack, or did she specify John Frederick?
Did she give a surname?

The 1915 birth already posted - illegitimate.

Tereza is John Frederick Bainbridge the only name you have been given please?

If it was Elizabeth Jobson then its her brother with them on the 1911 census as he's the right age.

Yorkshire is very likely. I did find a birth for a Henry Bainbridge March 1915 registered at Selby.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 30 Oct 2020 15:02

As your friend was born 1972, her mother was possibly born about 1930s-40s, and therefore Henry may have been born about 1915 or earlier, at a very rough guess.

If he wasn't born until after the 1911 census, and had left his uncle and aunt's home before 1939, there will be no record of them all together.

Is Yorkshire relevant, or likely?

Jack and Maud may have been his maternal relatives, and not named Bainbridge at all.

If one of them was indeed a Bainbridge, there's this marriage:

Marriages Jun 1907 (>99%)
BAINBRIDGE Maud Hartlepool 10a 301
HAND James Andrew Hartlepool 10a 301

Jack is usually a nickname for John, but can also be for James - or could bear no relation to his real name.

James's death:

Deaths Jun 1932 (>99%)

Maud in 1939:
